SU welcomes Shippo the Hippo for April Fool’s

Shippensburg University embraced the spirit of April Fool’s Day this past weekend and replaced beloved mascot Big Red with Shippo the Hippo for the day. Shippo was revealed on the university’s social media accounts Saturday morning before interacting with students across campus throughout the day.

Career Center hosts Internship and Job Fair

The Shippensburg University Career center hosted Career Week from March 23 to 30. The week was filled with professionally beneficial activities ranging from the Professional Dress Fashion show, the Dress Closet Open House, Resumania, DEI in the workplace and a Job and Internship Fair.

PAGE Center hosts Trans Week of Visibility

The Shippensburg University Pride and Gender Equity (PAGE) Center hosted many events for Trans Week of Visibility, which took place from March 27 to 31. Throughout the week, various events including an open mic and game night, speakers and a potluck dinner took place. To close out the week, the potluck welcomed students, staff and faculty to eat together and celebrate International Trans Day of Visibility.

On Thursday, the Manhattan district attorney indicted former president Donald Trump on the charge that he used his wealth to silence adult film star Stormy Daniels after she had accused him of having an affair with her.

Your World Today Commentary: Finding Inspiration When Life is a Little Lackluster

As an artist, it can sometimes be difficult to find inspiration to continue making you art, whatever that may be. Sometimes, nothing in your life seems to move you enough to drive you to make your art and your creative well keeps coming up dry. This is a problem many artists run into, and is not something to be afraid of. Writer’s or artist’s block does not mean you are a bad writer or artist, it only means you are human.

FAFSA workshops to be held on campus

We hope you had a wonderful spring break and are looking forward to the next half of the spring semester. If you have not completed your 2023-24 FAFSA and need assistance, our office is holding several FAFSA workshops on campus this spring. Pennsylvania residents must complete the FAFSA no later than May 1 for PA State Grant consideration.

SU and the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918

Although COVID-19 was the most recent pandemic to hit the campus of Shippensburg University, it was not the first. In fact, in October of 1918, a completely different virus descended upon the campus of what was then the Cumberland Valley State Normal School (CVSNS) — the Spanish flu.

Officer candidates address SGA’s negative perception at election speeches

Election season has once again come to Shippensburg University. Speaking from the podium in McFeely’s on Thursday, two candidates sought students’ votes for the 2023-2024 Student Government Association (SGA) Executive Leadership Committee (ELC). Of the five positions open for the election, petitions were filed only by a single candidate for the positions of president and vice president of Internal Affairs. No petitions were received for the positions of VP of Finance, VP of External Affairs or VP of Student Groups.

President’s hour held in Harley MPR

On Feb. 20, the campus was invited to President’s Hour in the Harley Hall MPR. An hour was dedicated to all members of campus to ask the questions they want answers to. The questions were directed toward SU President Charles Patterson and members of his administration, including Manuel Ruiz, Dean of Students Lorie Davis and many other staff members who serve the Shippensburg University campus.

SGA Budget and Finance Committee faces 65% turnover

In November 2022, the Student Government Association Budget and Finance Committee lost a majority of members following the departure of SGA Vice President of Finance Chase Slenker on Nov. 11. The Budget and Finance Committee allocates student activity fees to all student activities including intercollegiate athletics, student media, club sports, APB and more.

Shippensburg University hiring policy reveals unintended impact

When a position at Shippensburg University (SU) needs filled, a search committee is formed under the SU Search Process Guide. Section I of the guide states the committee “must be approved by the Human Resources Office and should include race and gender diversity.”

Your World Today: Street Harassment in Shippensburg

Last Wednesday was a surprisingly sunny mid-February day. It was unusually warm and the breeze mixed with chirping birds made me pause and appreciate the weather as I was walking off campus and down the sidewalk to my car. Suddenly, a red SUV whipped out of a side street and began barreling up the road toward me, interrupting the beauty of the day.
