Experts host panel to discuss war on Ukraine with SU students

On Feb 24, Vladimir Putin launched an attack on the country and citizens of Ukraine. In an effort to educate students about the ongoing conflict, Shippensburg University hosted a panel with some local experts. The panel, made up of three experts, included Catherine Clay, David Wildermuth and Mark Sachleben. Clay specializes in Russian history, and was a Fulbright scholar in Kyiv, Ukraine, in 1999. Clay presented some early history on the eastern European migration, and the beginnings of the Russian empire. Learning the history of these two countries can help us better understand the motives that are present today.

Members of the TFP stood outside Reisner Dining Hall with banners and bagpipes on March 14. Student members of the Silent Witness Peacekeeper Alliance stood near to support fellow students.

Student peacekeepers aided peers during demonstrator visit

On March 14, demonstrators from the American Society for the Defense of Tradition, Family and Property (TFP) set up outside of Reisner Dining Hall. While the waves of students passed by for lunchtimes, the group played bagpipes and chanted different phrases to bring attention to their group’s message.

Stay safe and have a blast on spring break

If a student’s spring break plans include alcohol consumption, be sure to do so responsibly. Travelers can look out for their health by remembering to drink water in between alcoholic drinks and pacing themselves to avoid alcohol poisoning or hangovers. When going out with others, travelers should watch each other’s backs and keep an eye on their surroundings, whether it is walking down the street to the next bar or getting into an Uber.

Your World Today Commentary: Don’t overlook friendship this Valentine’s Day

As the first months of the pandemic drew on, I spent an increasing amount of time on Messenger, a Facebook messaging app and Discord, a phone and laptop app that can host multiple people on one call. Even if I was just cleaning my room or putting away the dishes, I would hop on a Discord call to pass the time. Eventually, the semester drew to a close and summer dawned.

APSCUF applauds governor’s budget

A prominent state system faculty union is praising Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf’s recent budget plan for prioritizing public higher education. Association of Pennsylvania State Colleges and University Faculties (APSCUF) President Jamie Martin applauded the budget plan for its “much-needed investment” in the state system.

Black History Month across campus

February ushers in the celebration of Black History Month across the nation. Shippensburg University students, faculty, staff and administrators are hosting a variety of programming with opportunities to learn, celebrate and talk.

Over 125 students, faculty and staff gathered for the 34th MLK March for Humanity last week. This was the first march since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

34th March for Humanity, first held since March 2020

For the first time in two years, students held the annual MLK March for Humanity. On Thursday, Jan. 27 over 120 students, faculty and staff gathered outside of Old Main for the march. The march is sponsored by the African American Organization (AFRO-AM) and the office of Multicultural Students Affairs (MSA) and has not been held since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Chambersburg revokes housing NDO, impacts surrounding communities

Shippensburg University has created several initiates from administrative efforts to student groups that seek to support the diverse body of students and faculty in the SU community. The annual Diversity Week and the recent implementation of the Hate Has No Home Here campaign are only a few of the ways that SU has shown its support.

Your World Today Commentary: Broadening your skills while following your passion

When I started my college journey, I was one of the few who knew without a doubt what they wanted to do for a living. I had the privilege of feeling secure in my choice and was ready to dedicate the next four years to learn as much as I could about the ins and outs of journalism. This confidence helped me push through the tedious and hard courses, but it also had a downside.

Gilbert Hall lot adds commuter parking

Effective for the spring semester, 13 parking spaces in the FS-1 lot behind Gilbert Hall have been redesignated for student commuter parking, according to the Shippensburg University Police Department. The new commuter parking spaces are located at the west end of the parking lot and are marked with commuter parking signs.
