Shippensburg residents and visitors filled the downtown streets for the Shippensburg America 250 Parade to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the nation on Sunday, June 14.
The event was also held on Flag Day, an American holiday marking the adoption of the flag of the United States, which added to the meaning of the day.
The parade was hosted by the Shippensburg America 250 Committee in collaboration with the Shippensburg Area Chamber of Commerce.
The event featured a little bit of everything, including marching bands, dance groups, decorated vehicles and numerous community groups.
Multiple retired mayors and the current mayor of Shippensburg, Shaun Rogers, led the parade each in their own respective vehicle.
2018-2025 retired Shippensburg Mayor, Kathy Coy, shared her thoughts about the parade and its meaning for the Shippensburg community.
“The goal was to bring a sense of togetherness and celebrate the 250 years of our great nation,” Coy said. “A community diverse celebration was something refreshing to all that attended and participated.”
The parade was the first of many events occurring this summer planned by the Shippensburg America 250 Committee. Other events include the “Great America Picnic” and the Yankee Doodle 5k dash on July 4.
