The Shippensburg University Athletic Department unveiled a new athletics logo on Wednesday that will replace the icon Raider Ship logo. The former logo will continue to be the primary mark for the university.
The new mark features an anchor with a stylized red ‘S’ wrapped around the middle of it, keeping the tradition of SU’s athletics colors. This is the first new logo for SU Athletics since 1993.
SU created the new logo as part of a partnership with Collegiate Licensing Company. The company provides licensing and marketing services to over 800 colleges and universities, bowl games, the Heisman Trophy and more.
John Gregory, senior director of creative services for Collegiate Licensing Company, spoke on the logo.
“Our team is proud to help create a new distinct athletic mark that reinforces the overall Shippensburg branding while leveraging new, innovative features that complement the traditions of the university. We hope this new mark connects with fans and provides additional opportunities for merchandise and marketing in the future," said Gregory.
SU president, Charles Patterson, expressed his pride in the logo.
“Every time our Raider student-athletes compete, they carry Shippensburg University onto the national stage with pride, grit, and excellence. Our new athletic logo is as bold and fierce as they are,” said Patterson.
The logo was revealed first to SU student athletes during a ceremony in the Luhrs Center, with each athlete receiving free merchandise with the new logo. It was then revealed to the public on the university’s social media accounts later that evening.
The Raider Ship logo was originally designed specifically for SU Athletics, but it became so popular that it became the official university logo. The anchor will become the primary logo for the Raiders, unique but complementary to the Ship.
Shippensburg University plans to roll out the new logo in several phases. It is currently being used on the Ship Raiders website and social media accounts. It will be integrated into athletic facilities and team uniforms gradually throughout the year. Apparel and merchandise with the new logo are now available online.
