Scheib, Shay wrestle at NCAA Championships, Shay earns All-America honors

Shippensburg University´s wrestling team sent two athletes to compete at the 2023 NCAA Wrestling Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and returned with Avery Shay´s eighth-place finish and All-America honors in the 157-pound bracket.

On Friday, Shay won three of his four matches and had already clinched a top-eight place. Shay started with a 4-0 decision over Lander's Gage Bernall in the preliminary and continued with a tense 1-0 victory over No. 7 seed Jamar Williams of West Liberty to reach the quarterfinals of the championship bracket.

In the quarterfinal, Shay lost to No. 2 seed Nick Novak of St. Cloud State in an 8-1 decision, but in wrestlebacks he won a 5-2 decision over Carter Noehre from Colorado School of Mines to clinch his spot in the top eight.

In consolation quarterfinals on Saturday Shay fell to Trent Mahoney of King University and then lost to No. 3 seed Gabe Johnson of Central Oklahoma in the match for seventh place.

Shay finished his season in eighth place with All-America honors at NCAA Championships, with an overall season record of 16-5.

Danny Scheib also wrestled for the Raiders in the heavyweight bracket. In the opening round, he was matched up against the returning national champion, No.6 seed Darrell Mason from Minnesota State.

The score of the match was 1-1, so it went to overtime, which is decided by sudden victory. Scheib bear-hugged Mason for the first 20 seconds, and then rotated in an attempt to score when Mason was falling. Instead of scoring himself, his opponent landed on top of Scheib for a pin to end the match in a close decision.

In the following match in the consolation bracket, Scheib lost 4-0 to Jake Swirple of Minot State (N.D.).

Despite the losses, Scheib still concluded his 2022-2023 season with an outstanding 16-6 record.

The 2023 NCAA Wrestling Championships wrap up the 2022-2023 season for SU’s wrestling team.
