CUB 119 was packed with a public audience on Thursday, Dec. 4, as the Shippensburg University Student Government Association (SGA) held its final public meeting of the fall 2025 semester.
Important to Thursday’s meeting was the swearing in of the new SGA president, the new vice president of student groups and two new senators.
Vice President Daniel McCleary held a swearing-in ceremony for Kayla Rhodes, who will serve as Panhellenic Senator, and Kamryn Wilkerson, who will serve alongside Marlon Aristy as an MSA Senator.
In officer reports, Vice President of Finance Emily Wojnarski announced that a draft for the 2026-27 fiscal budget will be released in April 2026.
Officer reports were followed by brief reports from SGA’s senators. IFC Senator Ethan Sommer announced that IFC Rush Week will start on Feb. 2, 2026. Sommer encouraged students interested in Greek life to reach out to the chapters.
According to new MSA Senator Wilkerson, the new MSA Associate Director Arnold Taylor has officially started his position at SU.
After brief updates on recent activities from the Activities Programming Board (APB) and the Campus Media Board, updates were heard from the University Forum, which were given by Senator Ryan Mills.
According to Mills, the public health minor was recently recognized at SU, which will be implemented in the spring 2026 semester. A major is currently in the development process, he continued.
Additionally, the anthropology minor was sent into moratorium, with potential to return if future anthropology faculty are hired. A public health concentration was added to the sociology major due to the public health major not being accepted.
Two new students groups were approved at Thursday’s meeting. The two groups are the Disabled Students Union (DSU) and Applied Physics Club. Professor of sociology Allison Carey will be the adviser for DSU, and associate professor of physics Kathryn Shirk will be the adviser for Applied Physics Club.
Toward the end of the meeting, there were two officer transitions. As SGA President Nathan Garber is graduating at the end of the semester, the role of president was ceremonially transferred to current Vice President of Student Groups Ella Zinn. Class of 2028 Senator Chase Garrison was sworn-in as the new vice president of student groups to fill the position.
The decision for who would fill the two roles was decided through an SGA senators discussion according to Garber.
In one of his last actions as president, Garber recognized Vice President of Student Affairs Lorie Sheetz for the work she put in toward supporting students and student organizations on campus. A motion was passed to introduce the Lorie Sheetz Student Life Impact Award.
According to Garber, “This award is designed to recognize students that are making an impact on their circles on an off campus.”
To end the meeting, newly hired project director Maria Lewis gave remarks on the SU Campus Community Response Team. The goal of the organization is to lead prevention and intervention work for domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking.
According to Lewis, a $400,000 campus program grant was given to the team from the Department of Justice toward the development of awareness programs, events and the hiring of staff. The budget and programming costs are currently being finalized.
Thursday’s meeting was adjourned by new SGA President Ella Zinn at 4:51 p.m.
