Traditions were made in Ceddia Union Building Multipurpose Room on Saturday, November 18th when Juniors, Keri Barth and Kathleen Martin, attended their 4th  annual Paint Nite together.

Paint Nite is a lighthearted activity to gather with friends and create ornate art by following along with a step-by-step instructor.

“I’ve always had an interest in painting, and when I saw the university was offering an opportunity to paint at such a low-cost I had to go and try it out,” Barth said.

The Activities Program Board (APB) has hosted a Paint Nite almost every semester and both Barth and Martin look forward to a relaxing night of laughter and creativity together every year since their Sophomore year at Shippensburg University.

“I was interested in going to Paint Nite because I had heard a lot about them and that they’re super fun and easy, even if you aren’t artistically inclined,” Martin said.

The instructors guide you in making the select image they have for the evening by suggesting the best brush to use, which paints to select and mix and whether to dab or stoke the paint onto the canvas.

The instructors also encourage you to create whatever image you feel just as long as you “have fun and don’t say ‘mine sucks’,” as the Paint Nite oath reads, which they have everyone recite before starting.

The Paint Nite leaders just want the students to have an exciting time and as Barth said, “[The Paint Nite Company] always has great energy and are always positive about everything.”

Barth and Martin both said their favorite part of attending Paint Nite is spending time with their friends and roommates and making it an annual tradition. They also enjoy the fact that everyone hangs out and forgets about responsibilities for about an hour.

“I highly encourage everyone to go, regardless of their artistic abilities. You don’t have to be good at painting to have fun at Paint Nite,” Martin said. “You get to go home with a great painting!”
