Slaters’ snow day

Over the snowed-in weekend, our staff enjoyed a variety of activities, with everything from playing in the snow, to catching up on school work, to getting cozy under piles of blankets.

I spent the snowy weekend indoors watching TV and working on classwork. While that may not be as fun as playing outside in the snow, I have never really enjoyed cold weather, so it is plenty comfortable for me. That being said, walking around campus on Sunday night was highly enjoyable. The undisturbed snow blanketing every corner of campus created soothing visuals that washed away the stress of the coursework that I completed that day. Clearing snow from my car the next day reminded me of why I wish it was spring already.

Over the snowy weekend, I cozied up in my apartment. My roommate bought a bunch of groceries before the snow hit, which meant I was cooking up a storm in my kitchen. We watched movies and drank hot cocoa. Of course, we had to go play in the snow as well.

During my snow day weekend, my friends and I went out and walked around in the snow. We even saw the footprints of a little squirrel in the snow. We tried to build a snowman, but the snow was not very stable. Instead, we decided to have a snowball fight. After going outside and freezing — even with many layers on — we went inside and sat in the living room with our blankets, watched TV, ate snacks and cuddled with my cat, Dorito. We watched the snow come down a little more, and we stayed inside and warm for the rest of the day.

During the snow day, I took time to relax and recharge before the week of school ahead. For me, this looks like doing face masks, painting my nails, reading books and watching a lot of TV with my family. It was nice to take a step back and relax before the chaos of the semester started.

- Kyra McClister, Head Copy Editor

Before the snow day, my roommate and I prepared by cooking a large batch of curry. We spent our time stuck inside playing video and board games. I agreed to be brave and go out in the snow a single time. Since neither of us could make it to the store, it was nerve wracking to develop our snack stockpile, but we got it done by the skin of our teeth. When I was not socializing, I was buried under a blanket pile and trying to remember that it will, eventually, be warm outside again.

Unfortunately, I did not play in the snow. Instead, I got cozy under a pile of blankets while enjoying my snow day snacks and spending the day coloring. I did have to venture outside to make it to work, but fortunately, I avoided slipping on the ice. The view was probably the best part, as the giant piles of pure white snow brought a smile to my face.

While others may have been enjoying the snow in the literal sense, I took the long weekend as an opportunity to relax indoors and try to get ahead on my work for the week. The start of the semester is always a busy time as we get settled into our new class schedules and back into our college routines. So, I enjoyed the snow from afar, safe in my dorm, recharging from the week before, and getting prepared for the week ahead.
