The “Underration” of Hydration

  We have heard it since we were kids, “drink water!” “Be sure to stay hydrated!” We always brushed it off as just another health tip from mom, in one ear and out the other. I hate to break it to everyone, but our moms were right. According to the lay press, “75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated.” This is an issue that is overlooked by most of our nation. 

Staying hydrated has many benefits, including (but not limited to) improved digestion, clearer skin, boosted energy, improved muscle function, etc. With all these benefits, who would not want to stay hydrated? 

The best way to stay hydrated is to constantly consume water. A generally good rule is to drink half your body weight in ounces per day. Keep in mind, that your consumption may vary based on physical activity. The more you sweat, the more you drink. 

When I exercise, I put a diminutive amount of pink Himalayan salt into my water. While not essential, it helps hydrate you more than just water. More sodium in your water works like the big magnet power-up from Subway Surfers, but instead of catching gold coins, it draws water to your cells, which helps to build and maximize hydration. Sodium is a natural electrolyte, a mineral in our bloodstream that carries an electric charge. Honestly, the term “electric charge” paired with the gym was enough to sell me on putting salt in my water. After a killer push-day, drinking some water with a pinch of salt makes me feel like I shook the hand of Maxwell Dillon.

I know it can be difficult to build a new habit, but there are a few ways to ease your struggle. 

I noticed that I drank more water when I purchased a high-quality reusable water bottle. In my mind, I thought “I spent $40 on a water bottle, I am not wasting that.”  The amount of money I invested in it made me want to get more use out of it. Whether it’s a Yeti, Hydro Flask or Owala, you truly cannot go wrong with this investment. These three brands all keep your water cold for hours on end, which we all know improves the taste, no one enjoys sweltering water. They also usually last forever, and if they do not, they have astounding customer service and warranty plans. Your carbon footprint is reduced because you are not polluting the Earth with hideous plastic water bottles. 

When I began to drink more water, I often set times when I would drink. I would drink a cup of water at the top of every hour. After weeks of doing this, it began to be natural to me. My body naturally knew to drink water at these times, so I just went with it. 

Much like any goal, starting small and working your way up is the best way to go. Start with one more glass than you usually drink daily and increase that over time. Do not jump straight in, let your mind adjust to the change. 

Hydration is one of the most important tools in your arsenal when you are trying to become healthier. This tool will provide you with more energy and mind clarity. So please, do not end up like SpongeBob outside his helmet in Sandy’s dome, break away from those 75% of Americans, and stay hydrated. Your body will thank you.
