A small sinkhole opened up Sunday afternoon on Cumberland Drive outside of Franklin Science Center. Shippensburg University Police Department officers have blocked off the street from the entrance to Grace B. Luhrs Elementary School to Lebanon Drive.

SUPD has placed traffic cones around the sinkhole, which measures about four feet in diameter. Maintenance personnel are en route to address the sinkhole.

The hole appeared near a patch of gravel left over from when the university repaired a water line connecting Franklin Science Center to the main water loop. That issue, which occurred days after a water main break outside Naugle Hall in October, resulted in part of the sidewalk being torn up and replaced with gravel.

This story is ongoing, and will be updated when more information is available.

UPDATE: Cumberland Drive has reopened.
