A Gridiron slip-and-slide

(09/17/24 4:00pm)

On Sept. 6, the NFL hosted its first game in Brazil at Sao Paulo’s Neo Quimica Arena, where a sold-out crowd saw a shootout between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Green Bay Packers.

Slate Speaks: Analyzing the Trump-Harris Debate

(09/17/24 4:00pm)

President Trump’s former primary opponent, Nikki Haley, predicted that whoever picked a younger candidate would win the race for the White House. The first sign of that prophecy’s ascent occurred on a debate stage in Philadelphia last week, as Donald Trump appeared as an “old man yelling at clouds” in contrast to Kamala Harris’s calm appearance. Harris had some help from the moderators, though it is hard to imagine Trump doing much better in a different setting when he spent time telling fantastical stories about immigrants “eating the pets.”

Harris' economic plans, discussed

(09/07/24 2:22am)

Voters hoping to hear what Vice President Kamala Harris plans to do differently from her predecessor if elected president were left holding their breath after the candidate’s first sit-down interview last week with CNN’s Dana Bash.

The Slate Speaks: What makes a provost?

(08/28/24 2:51pm)

The presidential election is not the only event that will cause a change of leadership for Shippensburg University students. Starting this semester, Darrell Newton, Ph. D., will have his first full-length semester as the school’s new provost and vice president of academic affairs. We wish him luck as he takes the role during a fraught time in both the political and academic worlds.

Welcome back to election season

(08/28/24 2:42pm)

As students return to campus, they are preparing to resume their studies in a political environment that has seen little change in the issues but is also drastically different from when they left in the spring.

“Champions of What…?” -- the world

(08/28/24 2:40pm)

Nearly a year ago today, Olympic Track and Field athlete Noah Lyles uttered the phrase that frustrated the NBA community.

A special thank you from Dr. Michael Drager

(04/30/24 4:15pm)

In the 21 years I have served as adviser of The Slate, the student-run newspaper at Shippensburg University, I have never requested space in the publication for any reason. My role is, always has been and will continue to be in the background as adviser, mentor and cheerleader for the students who dedicate long hours to producing award-winning journalism.

Election Pessimism

(04/30/24 4:00pm)

With the 2024 presidential election quickly approaching, I have been reflecting on American democracy. There was once a time in my life where I was optimistic about the direction of our country and its politics. Now, that optimism is gone.

Saying goodbye or something stupid

(04/30/24 4:00pm)

It is kind of insane that in just over a week I will be (hopefully) walking across the field of Seth Grove Stadium to receive my diploma and officially be a college graduate. I say hopefully because I do not want graduation indoors; my grades are… fine. When the adults in your life tell you that these four years fly by, they are not wrong. Maybe COVID-19 keeping much of campus closed for the first full year of my college career played a part in the passage of time being a nonexistent concept to me.

The best of both worlds

(04/30/24 4:00pm)

During my childhood, I had always felt drawn to the Disney Channel show “Hannah Montana.” One of my biggest inspirations is Miley Cyrus, but I never knew the genuine reason I cared so much. Of course I knew that she was talented, individualistic and, to some, a role model. Nevertheless, I had other people I felt this way about, but none of them influenced me quite the way that Miley Cyrus did. So why was I so fascinated?

Australians are afraid of what lives in North America, too

(04/30/24 4:00pm)

Before embarking on my journey halfway across the world to Australia, I was repeatedly warned of the dangerous creatures that lurk down under.

Marjorie Taylor Greene Swamps Congress

(04/25/24 2:27pm)

Here is a suggestion for Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. If your goal for when you grow up is to be a commentator on Fox News, you can quit Congress at any time to go make that dream a reality. While Greene has not said that is her goal, it is the only explanation for her and her freedom caucus colleagues’ attempts to turn the House of Representatives into a swamp where no bills move without their say.

Solstice Expectations

(04/23/24 4:00pm)

Each year, humans experience solstices and equinoxes that lead to a form of anxiety in one way or another. As we inch closer to summer, there are many unrealistic expectations that our society depends on in regard to fully participating in the solstice. It is important to discuss why these social precedents are unrealistic. There are many different ways to have a good summer that do not include preconceived ideas of fun.

Mental presence and the issue of media overconsumption

(04/23/24 4:00pm)

I have one request of all my readers. Please unplug your headphones, stop your actions and limit your social interactions while consuming this piece. You will thank yourself later.

My mental health journey: an open letter

(04/22/24 2:43pm)

My name is Savannah Deibert, and I am a freshman here at the university.  I am a Psychology major, minoring in Women & Gender Studies.  My first semester was not all that great. I struggled a lot between my finances, classes, and mental health.  My mental health was the biggest struggle for me; I have depression and anxiety, and they were at its peak last semester.

The Slate Speaks: Take a break

(04/16/24 8:15pm)

As the semester draws to a close, April proves itself to be one of the most stressful time for students and faculty. Grades and assignments are piling up and events seem to be jammed back into this 31-day span. Now with the finals schedule released, the clock is ticking on those looking to finish the semester strong. If that’s not bad enough, for graduating students April is even more intense as the real world bites at their heels and the thoughts of post-college responsibilities keep them up at night. However, if you find yourself reading this and you’re one of the students in this predicament, take a moment and listen.

The result of an American Retreat: The U.S. and the Middle East

(04/16/24 8:13pm)

U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East has been in disarray for decades. It is one of the few political constants in the post 9/11 world. One exception to break that trend came, surprisingly, during the bombastic presidency of Donald Trump. Whether this can be attributed to luck, or the work of some unnamed diplomatic official, is unimportant, as Trump has called for Republicans to spurn this advantage and follow Biden Democrats down the same path of American retreat.
