The presidential race came closer to home this week as the Pennsylvania 2024 primary election kicked off on Tuesday, April 23. The campaigns running in Pennsylvania included both the Democratic and Republican primaries, as well as the primaries for attorney general, auditor general and treasurer. There were also several primaries for Congressional positions.

In the 21 years I have served as adviser of The Slate, the student-run newspaper at Shippensburg University, I have never requested space in the publication for any reason. My role is, always has been and will continue to be in the background as adviser, mentor and cheerleader for the students who dedicate long hours to producing award-winning journalism.

It is kind of insane that in just over a week I will be (hopefully) walking across the field of Seth Grove Stadium to receive my diploma and officially be a college graduate. I say hopefully because I do not want graduation indoors; my grades are… fine. When the adults in your life tell you that these four years fly by, they are not wrong. Maybe COVID-19 keeping much of campus closed for the first full year of my college career played a part in the passage of time being a nonexistent concept to me.

During my childhood, I had always felt drawn to the Disney Channel show “Hannah Montana.” One of my biggest inspirations is Miley Cyrus, but I never knew the genuine reason I cared so much. Of course I knew that she was talented, individualistic and, to some, a role model. Nevertheless, I had other people I felt this way about, but none of them influenced me quite the way that Miley Cyrus did. So why was I so fascinated?

A small sinkhole opened up Sunday afternoon on Cumberland Drive outside of Franklin Science Center. Shippensburg University Police Department officers have blocked off the street from the entrance to Grace B. Luhrs Elementary School to Lebanon Drive.

Here is a suggestion for Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. If your goal for when you grow up is to be a commentator on Fox News, you can quit Congress at any time to go make that dream a reality. While Greene has not said that is her goal, it is the only explanation for her and her freedom caucus colleagues’ attempts to turn the House of Representatives into a swamp where no bills move without their say.

Local Natives, an indie/folk rock band out of Southern California, released their sixth studio album this past Friday, “But I’ll Wait for You.” The record is a sister album to their last release, “Time Will Wait for No One,” and consists of tracks recorded in the same sessions as that album. The result is a beautiful 10-track record that tells a compelling story.

Shippensburg University’s Jazz Ensemble hosted its yearly concert in the Luhrs Performing Arts Center on Monday, April 15. The SU Department of Music presented the concert, which featured a variety of different jazz scores and plenty of soloists, all of which was put together by the hard work of the ensemble’s members and director Trever Famulare.

Shippensburg University’s women’s lacrosse team went 1-1 this week, falling to the West Chester Golden Rams on Wednesday and defeating the Millersville Marauders on Saturday. The win against Millersville was the team’s first PSAC win of the season moving their PSAC record to 1-8 and their overall record to 3-11.

Shippensburg. University’s track-and-field team had a strong performance in its first home meet of the year, with the men’s and women’s teams combining for 14 event wins, 53 PSAC qualifiers and 44 new personal collegiate bests in the Mid-Week Invitational at Seth Grove Stadium.
