Review: King Street Diner makes a comeback

If you are looking for a quick, affordable place to stop for food at any time of day, then the King Street Diner in Shippensburg, might be the place to go. Recently renovated in March 2024, the diner is open 24-hours every day and has a versatile menu with numerous options for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Previously called the Shippensburg Select Diner, The King Street Diner has a new, clean look with the same classic menu items.

I am a frequent customer at the King Street Diner, and my last visit was a great experience. My boyfriend and I went there for breakfast, as we do on most Sundays.

The diner is usually busy in the morning hours, but finding seating is never a problem due to its many tables and quick, attentive service. The interior of the diner has a classic look to it with a dark red trim around the ceiling, comfy booths and lots of windows to give the place a bright feel with natural lighting. It has a cozy, home-like feel to it.

Along with the indoor seating, there is an outdoor seating area that has tables with umbrellas. We were seated indoors immediately upon walking in, and our orders were taken not long after. The servers are always friendly and welcoming to everyone.

The food itself was satisfactory. I ordered over-easy eggs with home fries, toast and bacon, while my boyfriend had a short stack of pancakes, scrambled eggs and coffee. Everything was cooked well and tasted great. There are many options on the breakfast menu, so there is something for everyone, even picky eaters, and breakfast can be ordered at any time of the day.

Our waitress was very attentive, coming around every once in a while to check on us and to see if my boyfriend needed refills on his coffee. Our visit to the diner was quick and took around 40 minutes total, as the food was served to us within about 15 minutes of ordering it. The food did not cost much. We spent $20 total for both of our meals combined. Overall, it was a great experience with nothing that I could complain about.

One of the things that I like about the King Street Diner is how convenient it is for Shippensburg University students. The diner is only a three-minute drive or a short walk from campus, making it an ideal spot for students to grab a bite to eat. The diner also gives student discounts for those who show their Shippensburg University student ID at the register.

My friends and I have been regular customers at this diner location since our first year at Shippensburg University in 2022, so I was able to easily spot the changes that have been made to it post-renovation.

The diner’s previous main color scheme was a medium blue, and now it has been changed to dark red, which I find to be a more welcoming color. The sign outside, the trim around the ceiling and the menus have all been updated with this new color, although the booths and chairs are still blue, which makes the interior clash a bit.

The biggest change I noticed is the menu format. The menus are more organized and easier to read, and they are waterproofed in plastic instead of the simple paper menus that the diner used to have. The diner also used to have a claw machine and a photo booth in its entrance, but the photo booth has been removed and only the claw machine remains. The photo booth always made me and my friends’ trip to the diner more memorable, as we would use it every time we went, so it is greatly missed. However, even the claw machine alone is a good source of entertainment and a great addition that not many restaurants have. There have not been too many changes to the diner overall, as it has kept most of its original characteristics, such as its food recipes and friendly wait staff.

I look forward to eating at the King Street Diner every weekend. It is a spot that everyone attending Shippensburg University, or anyone in the Shippensburg area, should try at least once, and the low prices and great service make it worth it.
