The Slater of September is Hanna Atkinson for her abundance of contributions to the multimedia section. Atkinson is a first-year chemistry major with a concentration in forensics, and she joined The Slate staff in August as a staff photographer. Since joining, Atkinson has covered events every week, from rainy sporting events to cozy club meetings.

Atkinson started dabbling in photography almost seven years ago. “It started as a side hustle and it just kept going,” Atkinson said. She began photographing her school’s sports and family friend’s events, and it evolved over time into something she enjoys a lot.

The event Atkinson enjoyed covering the most before attending Shippensburg University was the 2047th Marine Corps Ball last November. Atkinson worked with the Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps at Dallastown Area High School to cover the event. The color guard performed and did a sword arch for the American Legion at the event, and Atkinson described the whole experience as “very formal, but very fun.”

Atkinson said that after she is finished with college, she would like to work in law enforcement as a chemist, while continuing her photography on the side.

The Slate management staff would like to recognize Atkinson for her quality work and dedication to the success of The Slate. As Slater of the Month, the entire staff congratulates her on her accomplishments and looks forward to her continued involvement.
