Letter to the Editor: HBO’s ‘Divorce’ is humiliating as an SU alumnus

Editor’s note: the following letter is in referenece to Episode 3, “Bad Manners,” of Season 3 in the HBO special, “Divorce,” which mentions Shippensburg University by name.

Dear Editor:

Sarah Jessica Parker’s “Divorce” (great Season 3, by the way) just tossed the final fragmentation grenade of humiliation at me: Her son can’t get into college anywhere, so the high school counselor suggests “Shippensburg? Nice little town. Do you like cows?”

FYI, Shippensburg is my undergraduate alma mater. Well I’m the proud owner of a brand-new box of crayons and I’m going to write colorful words to Ms. Parker and send it first class mail.

She’ll find out that Senator Jeanne Shaheen went to Shippensburg, as did Dean Koontz, and also Gen. Tommy Franks, who got his master’s there. They’re all halfwit yahoos like me, but we’re people too.

I feel raped, and I’m going to find a safe place now and play with teddy bears. Some Brown undergraduates will be there too. (They were deeply traumatized by Seinfeld reruns that featured the Soup Nazi.)

Sincerely,

Scott South (‘80)
