The Shippensburg University women’s soccer team split two Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchups this past week.

Shippensburg opened up the week on Wednesday by getting edged in a 4-3 loss to PSAC rival Bloomsburg University. The Raiders got off to a hot start in the game, bringing in a 2-0 lead at halftime.

The Raiders’ hot start continued well into the second half. With 10 minutes to play, they held a 3-1 lead, but things fell apart in the final minutes of the game. Bloomsburg struck for three quick, unanswered goals to win the game in the final minutes.

Sophomore Izzy Weigel opened up the scoring for Shippensburg in the seventh minute with her fourth goal of the season. Red-shirt freshman goalkeeper Courtney Merwin made five saves in the loss.

The Raiders continued the week on Saturday at David See Field with a dominant 5-2 win over Pitt-Johnstown. Shippensburg outshot Pitt-Johnstown 17-7, and they also had the advantage in shots on goal, 8-3.

Unlike their game earlier in the week against Bloomsburg, the Raiders got off to a slow start and went into halftime down 2-1. The team tied the game up in the 54th minute with a goal from sophomore Izzy Weigel, her fifth goal of the year.

The Raiders never looked back after tying the game as they went on to add three more goals, including another one from Weigel that came on a penalty kick. Freshman Taylor Moore had herself a good game as well, scoring her second goal of the year while also getting three shots on goal.

Weigel put together quite a week, totaling three goals in two games. She currently leads the team in goals with six on 30 shots.

Shippensburg currently stands at 3-8-1 overall, and 2-8-0 in the PSAC. The Raiders continue the 2017 season on the road against Kutztown University this afternoon.
