Christmas lights sparkled along the busy road as “Over and Over” by The Goo Goo Dolls roared from the radio.

“Over and Over” is from The Goo Goo Dolls’ latest album, “Boxes,” which came out in May. The band’s 11th album is a hidden gem that first sparked interest with the radio’s showcase of “So Alive.”

“Boxes” has a powerful thrust to it. The album’s buoyant tune uplifts broken spirits and creates a sense of hope for a new beginning, just in time for the new year. After listening to The Goo Goo Dolls’ new songs one cannot help but feel they can conquer the world and give their fears a slap in the face.

“Over and Over” in particular talks about moving on from the past. The chorus says, “And we go over and over and over again/ Are ya lost in the past thinking what might have been/ You’re here and you’re now started over and then/ Take it over and over and over again.” Artist Natalia Biegaj created a visual depiction of the song in her music video for the song.

The album continues with “Souls in the Machine,” a song about honesty in a world full of lies. The next song, “Flood,” features Ecosmith singer Sydney Sierota. “Flood” talks about what it is like to find comfort in a loved one.

The album includes 11 songs and goes through a roller coaster of emotions with slower and upbeat songs intertwined. Toward the end, “Boxes” picks up again with its hit “So Alive” which talks about rising above inner demons and challenges.

The Goo Goo Dolls is an iconic band from our back pockets that has not moved from its slumber since 2013. Though the band took a break from its album production, its songs have been continuously played and the group still tours.
