Field hockey earns academic honors

Over the past couple days, the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) has been announcing many different honors for student athletes with impeccable grades and immense skills on the field. The Shippensburg University women’s field hockey team in 2015 was among the few chosen to hold these high honors. Since the team achieved a team-wide 3.0 grade point average, the team was awarded the 2015 NFHCA National Academic Team Award for its outstanding academic marks. Sophomore Madison Scarr and senior Taylor Webster were just two out of 61 total DII women’s field hockey players who were honored with the 2015 ZAG Field Hockey/NFHCA DII Scholar of Distinction.

Women’s basketball wraps up successful season

The Shippensburg University women’s basketball team had a successful 2015-16 season and wrapped up with a strong presence in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament. SU began its PSAC play with a first-round bye after locking up the second seed in the east.

SU baseball falls to West Chester in doubleheader

The Shippensburg University men’s baseball team had back-to-back doubleheaders this Friday and Saturday, as they took on West Chester University in a home-and-home series. In the first game of the four-game series, the Shippensburg Red Raiders fell to West Chester 14-9. The high-powered offense of West Chester accumulated 13 hits in the game.

SU football star Grimes signs with Tampa Bay

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed former Shippensburg University football star, Brent Grimes, to a two-year deal worth about $16.5 million on March 11, shortly after free agency began. Grimes quickly found a home in Tampa Bay after being cut from his former team, the Miami Dolphins. He joins an already changed defensive secondary that includes cornerback Jonathan Banks, cornerback Josh Robinson, Alterraun Verner and a great selection of draft picks in a draft class ripe with defensive talent.

Beware the Ides of March — A warning all can heed going into the NCAA Tournament. March is widely considered the craziest time of the year in sports and this year will be no different. The college basketball regular season was an upset-filled thrill ride that included a record number of upsets.

Women’s basketball falls to No. 1 seed California University of Pennsylvania

The Shippensburg University women’s basketball team traveled to California, Pennsylvania, to take on the California University of Pennsylvania Vulcans in the semifinal round of the PSAC playoffs. In a heartbreaking loss for SU, the Raiders’ roster bolstered confidence throughout the evening with impressive performances by the starting lineup. The 78-62 loss featured junior Colleen Young as the leading scorer, which was her fifth game in which she led the team in points this season.

Tony Ellis had a strong showing for SU against Mercyhurst, nearly racking up a double-double. Ellis had 12 rebounds and seven points in the playoff loss.

Raiders fall in PSAC Semifinals, 79-68 to Mercyhurst

The Raiders reeled off magical victories in the first and second rounds of the PSAC playoffs, but once the Shippensburg University men’s basketball team arrived in West Chester, its luck ran out. The Raiders fell to the Mercyhurst University Lakers in the PSAC semifinals, 79-68.
