AAUW holds salary negotiation workshop to empower women

“You guys are the ones that are going to change the game,” said Shuchi Sharma, global head of business transformation services, market development for Systems, Applications and Products in data processing (SAP). Sharma spoke to students at Shippensburg University during the Start Smart Program last Tuesday. The program, held in Presidents’ Hall, is a women’s empowerment series, sponsored by the American Association of University Women (AAUW) focused on giving women the knowledge and skills to successfully negotiate their salary. According to Sharma’s presentation, women make 78 percent of what men do.

For almost two full years, Shippensburg University’s farm club and faculty have come together to keep the SU community farm well put together. On April 21, the farm club, along with several professors, came together to celebrate StewardSHIP Week 2016.

Wellness Fair helps students relax before finals

Dogs, massages, free food and drinks filled the Ceddia Union Building (CUB) on Wednesday, ready for students to arrive at the annual Shippensburg University Wellness Fair. The SU counseling center and human resources office combined efforts to bring 56 vendors to the CUB multipurpose room from 10 a.m.

Alex Shaw brings Brazil to SU with samba

While typical classes occur in lecture format with students seated at a desk and continuously fed information, a handful of Shippensburg University students learned through a samba workshop on April 15. Alo Brasil band leader Alex Shaw presented professor Gretchen Pierce’s history of Brazil class with a samba and drumming lesson during their typical class period.

SU students gather at the ShipRec center from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. to help the fight against cancer and honor those who have been affected by the disease.

SU honors loved ones at Relay for Life

More than 690 people participated in the Relay For Life event at Shippensburg University and raised more than $37,000 to fight back against cancer. Relay For Life is an overnight fundraising walk that gives people an opportunity to celebrate those who have battled cancer, honor those who lost and fight back against this disease. The people of SU camped out in the gym and the 36 teams took turns walking the track.

This year, Phi Sigma Kappa walked away with their fourth Greek Week win.

Rivalry sparks within Greek Life: Greek Week brings sororities and fraternities together for five days of competition

The stakes were high this past week within Greek Life at Shippensburg University, as fraternities and sororities competed for the coveted slot of Greek Week champions. Banners could be seen all around the Ceddia Union Building (CUB), representing each organization as well as the theme for 2016, “Welcome to the Jungle.” Fraternities and sororities participated in a number of games that kicked off on Sunday, April 3.

Alpha Omicron Pi awarded the winners of the tournament, Kappa Sigma, a banner and a $25 gift card to Arooga’s. This is a national event for all chapters of the sorority and there is one held each year.

Alpha Omicron Pi ‘Strikes Out Arthritis’ with Greek Life

On Saturday, April 2, Shippensburg fraternities and sororities met on the university recreation fields for friendly competition to help raise money for a good cause. Alpha Omicron Pi hosted its annual “Strike Out Arthritis” event, a charity wiffle ball tournament that raises money for the Juvenile Arthritis Foundation.

Comic of the year keeps SU laughing; touches on serious topics

Upbeat music blared from inside the dark Ceddia Union Building multipurpose room on Thursday night as an invitation to see the 2015 Comic of the Year. The comedian, Adam Grabowski, stood under a spotlight on the stage and threw colorful snap bracelets to audience members as they entered the room. While waiting for an introduction from the Activities Program Board (APB), Grabowski started playing music that he believed “fit” the mood of various singled-out audience members.

SEAS hosts 5K to save rainforest

Students at Shippensburg University took full advantage of being located along the Rails-to-Trails on April 1 as students hit the trails to run a 5K in order to raise money and awareness for Kids Saving the Rainforest (KSTR). SU’s Students for Environmental Action and Sustainability (SEAS) teamed up with KSTR to hold its first 5k.
