Emotions of war told in song and strings

In a generation where the news is filled with endless conflicts, the Shippensburg University Orchestra and the SU Concert Choir combined forces to present “Peace in Time of War.” “Not only do we get to have a really large orchestra, which is lots of fun,” orchestra director Mark Hartman said to audience members, “This is the first time I’ve been here that we’ve ever worked with the choir.” Typically, the department of music and theatre arts of SU presents separate concerts for the SU Orchestra and the SU Concert Choir.

Brad VanGrack sings “If There Were no Rich Men,” a parody of “If I Were a Rich Man” from the musical, “Fiddler on the Roof.” He depicts Bernie Sanders, singing about wealth re-distribution, universal healthcare and the war on Wall Street.

Capitol Steps satirizes U.S. politics at Luhrs

The comedic group Capitol Steps put on a laughing riot at the H. Ric Luhrs Performing Arts Center last Thursday. Capitol Steps started its run in 1981, commentating on the political atmosphere of the United States and the rest of the world.

Aboard Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola (Nov. 15, 2002) -- Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Tim Sudduth, from Vashowish, Wash., demonstrates the Virtual Reality (VR) parachute trainer, while Aviation Survival Equipmentman 1st Class, Jackie Hilles, from Ekland, Penn., controls the program from a computer console. Students wear the VR glasses while suspended in a parachute harness, and then learn to control their movements through a series of computer-simulated scenarios. The computer receives signals from the student as they pull on the risers that control the parachute. The VR trainer also teaches aircrew personnel how to handle a parachute in different weather conditions and during possible equipment malfunctions. 'American Idol' finishes its iconic run in television

Last Thursday marked the end of a 15-season run of the iconic television show, “American Idol.” The finale was packed with tons of nostalgia, emotions and, of course, music. The show’s cancellation was expected due to the ratings dive and the show’s expensive production cost.

Noah Guthrie dominates at The Thought Lot

Internet sensation Noah Guthrie performed in Shippensburg for the first time Sunday night. He walked onto the stage of The Thought Lot, with attire suggesting he has been touring on the road for months — a brown top hat, brown blazer and jeans, and to top it off, his acoustic guitar. But for Guthrie’s only third performance in his new miniature summer tour, he rocked the “little cute town” of Shippensburg leaving the impression that Guthrie has decades of rock music ahead of him. Guthrie released his first album in 2014.

A year after Zayn Malik left mega-boy band One Direction, he has dropped his first solo album. Unsurprisingly, it has gone straight to No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart. Malik, who stirred some news within the last year with talk of his solo work, released “Mind of Mine” on March 23 to anxious fans after releasing two singles, “Pillow Talk” and “Like I Would.” The album is, for lack of a better description, really good from start to finish.

Kassandra Lawyer sings ‘Saving All My Love’ for Heat 1 of the finals for ‘Ship’s Got Talent.’ Lawyer ended up winning the competition, stunning the judges with ‘Bound to You.’

Kassandra Lawyer wins ‘Ship’s Got Talent’

“Ship’s Got Talent” ended Wednesday night and it surely did not disappoint. The three remaining finalists, Kassandra Lawyer, Tara Kennedy and Sophia Jones, stood out in their own individual ways. Instead of singing one song each, the finalists sang twice to earn the audience’s and judges’ votes.

The ‘Million Dollar Quartet’ performs on stage at the H. Ric Luhrs Performing Arts Center. The performance told the story of Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash attempting to record a studio album together in 1956, though they never played live.

‘The band that never was’ performs at Luhrs

Charlie, played by Nickolys Hinton, sets flowers down on Algernon’s grave, a rat. In the play, Charlie learns that he and Algernon experienced similar experiments at a mental center.

‘Batman v Superman’: dawn of bad ideas

Warning: Major Spoilers The highly anticipated “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” has hit theaters, and fans are eagerly waiting to watch bad production decisions be played out in a movie. Warner Bros.’ (WB) attempt to give Marvel a run for its money with its own cinematic universe of DC Comics vigilantes began with the nauseating “Man of Steel.” Director Zack Snyder has returned to tell the second part of Superman’s story, with the same mistakes, same boring action and same complete disregard for character motivation. As it is with most movies, even bad ones, there are still great things to mention. Despite my mixed reactions, everyone should see this in theater for its visual splendor. First, the good: Ben Affleck as the new Batman is stunning.

SU students to perform ‘The Bald Soprano’

This Friday, Shippensburg University students will be perform Eugène Ionesco’s play, “The Bald Soprano.” Associate Professor of French, Blandine Mitaut, has arranged the opportunity with the Office of Social Equity, the Commission on Human Understanding and the Department of Modern Languages to allow SU students to witness an important “anti-play,” originally written in the 1950s. The brochure explains that “The Bald Soprano” is a “parody of bourgeois preoccupations with conformity and the pettiness of a life lived artificially,” that “Ionesco reveals the absurdity of a world without apparent meaning.” The play will have three performances — this Friday at 8:00 p.m., this Saturday at 3:00 p.m.

Tara Kennedy sings an original acoustic song called “Stupid Muse.” Her performance won her a spot for the third round of “Ship’s Got Talent.”
