Give it a Thought: Top Six Events at SU

(04/12/23 4:00am)

Throughout my time at Shippensburg University, I have prided myself on attending all sorts of campus events and have certainly fully utilized my student activity fee. Shippensburg University truly has a diverse array of student organizations, programs and engaging events that can provide engaging experiences for almost any student. Over my four years, I found myself returning to certain events year after year that have become a staple of my Shippensburg experience; not to mention many other students across campus. I recommend all students attend these six events, shows, performances and trips before graduating:

Who wears the pants? Gender and fashion in the 1940s and 50s

(04/11/23 4:00pm)

Pants were just beginning to come into style in the 1930s, going from socially unacceptable and immodest to something modern, stylish women wore. The 30s saw the rise of women’s trousers in the public eye thanks to movie stars like Katherine Hepburn, but they were still not as prevalent or acceptable as they are today. The 1940s saw a major change.

Academic Culture in South Korea

(04/11/23 4:00pm)

In South Korea, school is even more serious than it is in the US. The structure of Korean life revolves around studying hard and doing well, which in some ways is harmful when it comes to students planning for a future outside of academics.

A Bit of Biology: Fungi

(04/11/23 4:00pm)

From rich soil to a dead tree or even your own skin, fungus thrives in many locations and continues to grow by spreading spores through the air like pollen. Fungi can provide us with many resources such as medicine, biofuel, food and textiles, but it can also spread deadly diseases and weaken our immune system. Fungi are unique because they take apart their habitat to create something new that can be beneficial or harmful to humans.

Slowly but Shively: Nothing to do with you

(04/11/23 4:00pm)

The past couple of days have been tumultuous to say the very least: I learned to never underestimate how hateful the internet (and people) can be. I could not shake a constant feeling of anxiety and lost a lot of sleep. Though high school is in the past, I’ve found many college students like to resurrect petty habits. As much as I tried to deflect and laugh it off, the words I read struck my heart and made my hands tremble.

Happy and Healthy Living Abroad

(04/08/23 5:00pm)

When I was packing for my time abroad in South Korea, I did not give too much of a thought to how my health would be impacted while abroad. Sure, I thought about all the new experiences, but never what kinds of adjustments I would need to make to my daily life in order to keep myself functioning. Over the past four months, I have needed to change my diet, my exercise routines, my sleep schedule and more to maintain my health while being outside of the U.S. for the first time.

Who wears the pants? – Gender and fashion in the 1920s and 30s

(04/04/23 4:00pm)

Pants are certainly a staple in anyone’s wardrobe these days, – especially jeans. Yet, trouserrs were not always for everyone. Before 1930, it was unacceptable for a woman to wear true pants unless they were a specific type of pant meant for sleeping, work or sports activity. Such garments were not worn in the public eye and considered immodest. Many articles of clothing that women wear today were somewhat socially restricted and only meant for men’s use. The 1920’s saw the beginning of change.

Hear Me Out: ASL Education is necessary for everyone

(04/04/23 4:00pm)

During my year of community college, I was lucky enough to be offered the opportunity to take an American Sign Language (ASL) course. I had taken ASL classes in high school before, though my class was taught by a hearing teacher, so it was not as immersive. However, during my year of ASL taught by a deaf professor, I consider it to be the class that has educated me most. I was able to learn about the history of an entire culture and gain perspective for their way of life. While my ASL course was certainly the most enriching one I have taken, I continue to wonder how different would the world be if they knew what I had learned?

Big Red’s Bird Review: Red-tailed Hawk

(04/03/23 4:00am)

Red-tailed hawks live in North and Central America and often find their home in many environments such as plains, farmlands, open woodlands and deserts. They help farmers by picking off rodents and moles that disturb their crops by swooping down and grabbing them, exposing their bright yellow feet. You may have even seen a red-tailed hawk perched on an electricity post proudly puffing out its white and brown spotted chest as you drove by. Perhaps you have seen its iconic red tail as it relaxes on a branch in your neighborhood. Even if you are not actively searching for this bird, you cannot escape its famous call.

Slowly But Shively: Retail Therapy

(03/28/23 4:00pm)

Since my senior year of high school, I have worked in a boutique in the downtown of my hometown. Sure, I love being around cool clothes — let alone wearing them. However, the most wondrous aspect of my time working in retail has been discovering the ways in which fashion translates to everyday life. Though it has taken time and a little perspective, I constantly remind myself of the secrets of wisdom I have found hidden in the dressing room.

Slowly But Shively: Post-Cry Clarity

(03/21/23 4:00pm)

One afternoon, as I set my backpack down after my classes, I could feel my mind begin to dwell on a painful situation that I really wished I hadn’t had to endure. It had happened a long time ago, and I had already processed it a good deal. Afterward, I had decided I had sufficiently healed and would do everything in my power to put it behind me. Still, months later, beneath the covers of my dorm bed, I could feel it begin to weigh on my chest as it conquered my thoughts.

Crashing Into the Language Barrier

(03/17/23 3:05pm)

The language barrier is very real. Because I lived a solely English-speaking existence prior to coming to South Korea three weeks ago, I had never realized how much of a challenge it is. I chose to come to Soonchunhyang University for my semester abroad because I wanted a challenge, but I did not realize how much I would have to overcome.
