Shippensburg University women’s tennis hosted three matches this past week, earning a win against Lock Haven while dropping losses to West Chester and Goldey-Beacom.

SU began its busy schedule on Tuesday when the Raiders battled West Chester on a sunny but cold and windy afternoon. They could not stop the Golden Rams, falling 7-0 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division match at Robb Sports Complex.

Shippensburg rebounded on Thursday when they picked up a convincing 7-0 victory over Lock Haven in a non-conference match at home that was rescheduled from March 27.

SU had all eight of its currently healthy players contribute to the team victory over Lock Haven (2-7).

In doubles, sophomore Jade Miller and junior Brinley Orris formed the No. 1 pairing on Thursday and achieved a 6-2 victory. Graduate student Yasmin De Meyer and junior Ava Kalist won 6-0 at No. 2 doubles, while junior Janelle Kingsboro and freshman Taylor Maguire posted a 6-1 won at No. 3 doubles.

It was the first time that Miller and Orris had been paired together in doubles. Kingsboro and Maguire are now 2-0 as the No. 3 doubles pairing. Thursday’s win now accompanies a previous victory for the duo at Penn State Altoona.

De Meyer and Kalist are now the most frequently used doubles tandem this season, as it was their fourth victory in nine matches working together.

Graduate student Corinne Markovich picked up her fourth win of the season at No. 1 singles, outlasting her opponent Megan Ferris by scores of 6-4, 6-3. Markovich fell behind early in the second set but rallied by breaking serve on multiple occasions, including in the decisive final game.

De Meyer won 6-2, 6-4 over Alaina Marchioni at No. 3 singles. It was De Meyer’s first win in four matches at No. 3 singles this season and her fifth overall singles victory of the year.

Miller (No. 2 singles), Orris (No. 4 singles), junior Rachel Gallagher (No. 5 singles) and Kalist (No. 6 singles) all won 6-0, 6-0 in their respective matches.

Gallagher, Miller and Orris all picked up their sixth singles victories of the season. Kalist recorded her fifth overall and improved to 4-3 on the season at No. 6 singles.

Saturday, Shippensburg suffered a 6-1 setback to Goldey-Beacom in a nonconference match at Robb Sports Complex.

Shippensburg (6-11) got a win from Orris at No. 5 singles and took a total of 15 points in a very competitive doubles competition. Orris dispatched her opponent by a 6-1, 6-1 final score.

Gallagher and Miller posted a 6-4 win at No. 3 doubles, and the combination of Markovich and Koganti won three games in a setback on the No. 1 doubles court.

Goldey-Beacom (7-9) pulled out a close victory over SU’s De Meyer and Kalist at No. 2 doubles to help the Lightning take the doubles point. De Meyer and Kalist battled to a tiebreaker in a 7-6 Goldey Beacom win.

Shippensburg continues its homestand with a  conference match against Kutztown next Saturday at 11 a.m.
