Dearest gentle reader,
This author is abuzz after the conclusion of Mayfair’s fourth social season. Indeed, the Bridgerton family had another eventful, nearly scandalous, season that concluded with the happy nuptials of Benedict Bridgerton and Miss Sophie Gun, a lady of Penwood House.
While little is known about how the pair formed an attachment, this author is aware that Mr. Bridgerton’s heart became occupied following the masquerade ball hosted by the Dowager Viscountess.
Indeed, the second son spent the beginning of the season searching for a mysterious woman clad in a silver dress who was in attendance, which leads this author to speculate whether Miss Gun could be her.
Mr. Bridgerton caused yet another stir this season when he got into a skirmish with some other gentleman during an evening soiree at Cavender House. Though the origins of the quarrel remain unknown, it is more puzzling that Mr. Bridgerton was later seen leaving on a carriage with one of the Cavenders’ servants.
Whilst on the topic of servants, the former Lady of Penwood caused a mass reshuffling of maids across the ton, after she fired one of her own and was forced to rehire three as replacements. This author can only ponder why she would get rid of such capable help.
Most notably, Mr. Bridgerton was not the only Bridgerton to form an attachment this season. It would seem the Dowager Viscountess may have been spending time with one Lord Anderson. Though as of late, the two have not been seen together, leading this author to wonder, what went wrong?
As for the other Bridgertons, the Viscount and Viscountess have at last returned to the ton, boasting a new heir, after their time abroad. And it seems the youngest Bridgertons are having their fair share of fun, with Gregory returning from Eton and Miss Hyacinth sneaking into a ball dressed as a servant, no less.
It is with a heavy heart that this author must report that the Lady of Kilmartin, formerly Miss Francesa Bridgerton, was widowed after the Earl of Kilmartin unexpectedly departed this life. Worse still, the pair failed to produce an heir, meaning the Kilmartin title and seat in the House of Lords will be redistributed.
In better news, Mrs. Alice Mondrich has been named as a lady in waiting for the Queen herself. This author wonders if this may be related to the recently announced departure of the Queen’s most trusted confidant, Lady Agatha Danbury.
With many ups and downs, this season was eventful to be sure. But if this author is being quite honest, the culmination of this season was rather underwhelming. Afterall, the season in which the Viscount married can hardly be topped.
Nevertheless, this author is quite pleased with the match Mr. Bridgerton made for himself. But now that Mayfair’s most eligible bachelor is off the market, whom will the ton set their eyes on next?
I shall leave you to ponder this question, as I will be until the next social season is upon us.
Yours truly,
Lady Whistledown
