Shippensburg University’s men’s wrestling team had a busy week on the road, traveling to Seton Hill University for the Seton Hill Duals and to Elizabethtown College for the D. Kenneth Ober Memorial Tournament.

The Seton Hill Duals were hosted on Tuesday. Shippensburg dropped two dual meets to Seton Hill and Wheeling, 31-9 and 29-21, respectively.

In the opening match against the Griffins, three Raiders scored decisions. Freshman Kyle von Schmidt earned a 5-3 decision at 133 while junior Diesel Koser shut out his opponent 4-0 at 197. Graduate Nick Delp added another win to his 13-0 record this season. The match was a tight back-and-forth, but Delp pulled out a 6-3 decision.

The match against Wheeling had impressive outings from senior Kyler Everly and Koser.

At 174, Everly held an early lead on his opponent until a second-period takedown. Everly bounced back quickly to regain the lead with a reversal into a half nelson for the fall.

Koser had an exciting takedown with 30 seconds left in the third period to come back from a 5-4 deficit to a 7-5 decision victory.

On Saturday, the Raiders placed six wrestlers on the podium for the D. Kenneth Ober Memorial Tournament. Overall, the team scored 107 points to place fifth in the competition.

Von Schmidt claimed the 133 tournament title with a 4-0 record. Mike Trainor placed third at 149, redshirt freshman Cole Coffin placed fourth at 141, Koser earned fifth at 197 and sophomore Noah Gilgore and senior Anthony Lavish finished in sixth place at 133 and 157, respectively.

Von Schmidt earned falls against his first two opponents and then fought his way to a pair of close decisions in the semifinals and finals. The freshman trailed his opponent 7-0 in the semifinal match but fought his way back to win the match with an extra riding time point, prevailing 9-8.

The championship match was against Elizabethtown’s Corey Cope. Von Schmidt scored a takedown and escape point to earn the top spot, 4-2.

Trainor earned his third-place finish after a hard-fought tournament showing. He finished 5-1 overall with an impressive pin finish in the third-place match.

Everly and sophomore Anthony DeAngelo also picked up three match wins in the 174-pound bracket.

The Raiders will rest up this week and return on Sunday, February 4. The team will travel to East Stroudsburg for matches against East Stroudsburg, New York University and New Jersey City University.
