Men’s wrestling places fifth overall at Kenneth Ober Memorial Invitational

Shippensburg University’s men’s wrestling team traveled to Elizabethtown College on Saturday, Jan. 25 for the Kenneth Ober Memorial Invitational. The team placed fifth overall with 93.0 points. 

Five Raiders were individual place winners. 

Redshirt sophomore Michael Trainor (149), graduate Nicholas Delp (165) and junior Owen Koch (184) placed second at their respective weight classes. Junior Trey Shoemaker placed third at 174 pounds, and sophomore Diesel Koser placed fourth at 197 pounds. 

Trainor won four matches straight with one tech fall, one fall and two major decisions. He ultimately fell to Mike Glynn from Rochester University of Technology. 

Delp made a standout season and Raider debut at 165 pounds. After a bye in the first round, Delp won three matches straight to go to championship match where he fell by decision 8-6. He recorded one tech fall, one fall and one decision.  

Koch won his quarterfinal and semifinal match at 184 pounds by decisions after receiving two byes.  He suffered a fall to Elizabethtown’s Ganon Smith. 

Shoemaker’s third place medal was an uphill battle. After receiving a bye in the first round, Shoemaker wrestled a major decision 10-0 and then fell to Elizabethtown’s Gavin Fehr.  

In the consolation round, Shoemaker won two matches by fall and one by decision to face Fehr again in the third-place final. Shoemaker ultimately earned a tech fall against Fehr 16-0. 

Koser recorded a fall and ultimate tiebreaker victory before entering the consolation round where he won his first match by decision. In the third place match, he fell by decision to Rochester University of Technology’s Nicholas Smith 5-2.

Seven Raiders also picked up wins on the day. 

Sophomore Eli Bounds recorded a decision, tech fall and fall and junior Cole Lang recorded two wins with a decision and fall.

Sophomore AJ Stayton and junior Kyler Everly both recorded one fall. 

Junior Anthony Lavish picked up a major decision, sophomore Calvin Lederer recorded a decision, and senior Connor Livingston earned an ultimate tiebreaker win.

The Raiders return to action next Thursday at 7 p.m. for a match against Millersville University at Heiges Field House.
