As Shippensburg University student groups prepare to submit their 2025-2026 budget requests, four new groups will be able to request funds after being approved at the Oct. 3 Student Government Association (SGA) meeting.

Ski and Snowboard Club, Pickleball Club, Golf Club and NotSo Hidden Figures Club were all unanimously approved by SGA. The groups will be eligible to receive funding starting in the next fiscal year, which begins on July 1, 2025. All student groups must have their budget requests submitted by Oct. 31, 2024.

Before voting on action items, SGA Vice President of Internal Affairs Katie Huston led the swearing-in of five newly elected senators — Abigail Reasoner, Class of 2025 Senator; Chase Garrison, Class of 2028 Senator; Matt Jones, Class of 2028 Senator; Daniel McCleary, Transfer Senator; and Josephine Hughes, Commuter Senator. Elections for these positions took place earlier this semester, with a voter turnout of 106 students.

SGA also heard from SU Provost Darrell Newton, who did not take questions but vowed to meet with its members at a later date to field questions and hear their concerns. SGA President Lillian Sellers invited Newton to a private caucus.

Vice President of Finance Nathan Garber noted that all student group training sessions had been completed and reiterated the Oct. 31 due date for 2025-26 budget requests. Vice President of External Affairs Natalie Nichols did not have a report for the second consecutive meeting.

During senator reports, Interfraternity Council Senator Ethan Sommer shared about the ongoing toiletries drive, with donation boxes available on the first floor of the CUB. He also previewed an all-star kickball game. Multicultural Student Affairs Senators Cassidy Vangas and Marlon Aristy highlighted the successes of Diversity Week and previewed the Oct. 5 Free To Be Me Baller’s Ball.

Before adjourning the meeting, Sellers announced the first installment of a reimagined President’s Hour, which is now run by SGA instead of the Residence Hall Association (RHA).

President’s Hour will no longer take place at night and will occur on Oct. 24 at 4 p.m. in CUB 119. There will be a “smaller panel of admin,” Sellers said, and students will be able to submit questions in advance if they are unable to attend in person.

SGA’s next public meeting will be Nov. 7 at 4 p.m.
