Softball splits with Shepherd and Millersville

Shippensburg University softball split both series’ it had this week against Shepherd and Millersville universities. 

The Raiders split their Tuesday doubleheader against the Shepherd Golden Rams. They did the same on Sunday when they traveled to Millersville, splitting the series with their conference foe. 

Despite outhitting the Raiders 7-3 in Game 1 and 8-5 in Game 2, the Golden Rams fell to the Raiders 2-0 in the first game of the doubleheader. Junior pitcher Alicia Ball starred in Game 1, completing her second shutout of the season with five strikeouts against the Golden Rams. Sophomore Caitlyn Martell scored both runs of the game with help from freshman Sarah Saboscik. Saboscik would also score with a sacrifice flyout to center field in the third inning. 

The Raiders struggled in Game 2 on Tuesday. After Shepherd scored three times in the first five innings, the Raiders managed to score in the bottom of the fifth inning with a sacrifice flyout from Emilee Sullivan. 

Shepherd pitcher Kourtney McNatt played a complete game striking out two and walking one in a 5-1 win at Robb Field. Caitlin Donnelly and Lexi Clatterbuck would have two RBIs each in the Golden Rams’ win.

Shippensburg traveled to Millersville in a Saturday doubleheader to take on the Marauders at Seaber Stadium. Shippensburg outhit Millersville 25-16 on the day. In Game 1, the Raiders scored five runs in the first inning, but Millersville outscored Shippensburg 4-1 in the first three innings of Game 2.

Senior Taylor Myers, went 4-for-9 on the day at the leadoff spot with 2 RBIs and a run. Her lone hit in Game 2 solidified her spot in the history books for the Raiders, moving to third on the all-time list for hits in a career. 

Caitlyn Martell would go 5-for-8 on the day with two RBIs, two runs and a double. Alicia Ball played a complete game for the 16th time this season, striking out two. She only allowed one earned run and five hits. Sarah Saboscik scored three runs on the day, along with a double and triple. 

In Game 2, Millersville took over early, and the Raiders struggled to recover. Junior Kendra Bumgardner went 2-for-3 at-bat and scored two of the five total runs in the Marauders' Game 2 victory. Senior Alex Schaefer took over in the sixth inning and struck  out one and earned the save on the game. 

Shippensburg will travel to West Chester for a doubleheader on Tuesday and Mansfield for a doubleheader on Friday. They host Kutztown on Saturday for a doubleheader on Senior Day.
