Shippensburg takes down East Stroudsburg on Senior Day; George Scores 1000th point

Shippensburg University’s women’s basketball team defeated East Stroudsburg at the Heiges Field House on Senior Day following a solid performance by Treasure George. 

Not only did the graduate student lead the team in scoring, but she did so by scoring her 1000th point in her collegiate career.

On Tuesday, the Raiders suffered a loss on the road at Mansfield, where the Mounties made nearly 50% of their field goals. Despite the tough loss, freshman Mia Johnson has a solid outside, scoring 23 points.

Shippensburg regained momentum later in the game but eventually fell short of its PSAC rivals. Mansfield’s scoring was dominated by Katie Sheeler with 21 points..

Before Saturday’s tipoff, a special pregame ceremony honored graduating seniors like Treasure George, Carolina Rodriquez-Sanchez and Madi White. The game started with a low-scoring first quarter by the Raiders, allowing only two points thanks to solid defense. Shippensburg would get to the foul line frequently, scoring 20 of 26 from the free-throw line.

Treasure George scored her long-anticipated 1000th career point as she hit a key three-pointer before the half, and she also led the team in scoring with 16 points. The Raiders had a comfortable lead at the half. Shippensburg remained consistent over the struggling offense of East Stroudsburg, forcing more turnovers. They would go on to defeat the Warriors 55-45.

Abbie Miller had a strong performance, boasting a solid 15-point game along with eight rebounds. Shippensburg struggled from beyond the arc, going 1 for 12, but took advantage of Mansfield’s foul trouble by going 20 for 26.

The Raiders will return home on Feb. 28 to take on Shepherd University following a trip to play West Chester this Wednesday. Women’s basketball is looking to finish its season strong after winning two of the last three games.
