Lacrosse scores most goals in five years, wins season opener

Shippensburg University lacrosse began its 2024 season Saturday, turning a close game early into a 17-7 blowout win against Holy Family. 

The Raiders were down 5-4 in the second quarter but scored the game’s next 12 goals to pull away. The 17 goals is the most recorded by the team in a game since 2019, when it beat Lock Haven 17-9.

Sophomore Keegan Dings scored the first goal of the season less than five minutes into the contest. The Raiders added two more goals shortly after, the first from sophomore Shannon Wood, followed by one from senior Emily Fenwick.

Holy Family scored the next three goals to tie it until junior Sara Vosburg scored in a man up period to give Shippensburg the lead with six seconds left in the first quarter.

After falling behind 5-4 early in the second quarter, freshman Alexa Bailey scored her first goal as a Raider, followed by Vosburg scoring her second of the game to put Shippensburg ahead 6-5.

The third quarter was the turning point of the match, with Shippensburg outscoring Holy Family 6-0 in the frame. Vosburg scored another two goals, along with freshman Ava Collins getting the first two goals of her college career. Dings and Bailey each scored in the third, putting them both at two goals for the contest.

The Raiders scored another five goals in the fourth quarter, including Vosburg’s fifth of the game, the third five-goal game of her college career. Bailey made it a hat trick in her collegiate debut in the quarter, with senior Payton Margerum also scoring a pair. Freshman Olivia Glinski put the finishing touches on the match, scoring her first Shippensburg goal with 57 seconds left to make it a final score of 17-7.

Shippensburg scored on over half of its shots in the contest, outshooting Holy Family 33-23. The defense was also strong for the Raiders, forcing 21 turnovers, along with junior Kayla Vosburg picking up nine saves as goalie.

Shippensburg lacrosse has the week off before its second of six straight road games to start the season, taking on Frostburg State on Saturday at noon.
