The Shippensburg University women´s tennis team opened its season with two losses against Chestnut Hill, 7-0, and California (Pa.), 6-1, in two non-conference matchups on Friday and Saturday.

On Friday, the tennis team opened its season with a home match against Chestnut Hill, but dropped it, 7-0.

The No.1 and No. 3 doubles both dropped their matches 6-0. Meanwhile, the No. 2 double, made up of sophomore Corinne Markovich and freshman Rachel Gallagher, won one game, but also lost, 6-1.

Markovich won a game in the first set of the No. 1 singles match but dropped the first set 6-1. In the second set, trailing 2-0, Markovich went to the ground and needed treatment. She was able to resume the play but lost the second set 6-0.

Gallagher, fellow freshman Ali Zapach and junior Brooklyn Rupert also won one game in their respective singles matchups. Junior Kendall Winters picked up four games in her No. 6 singles matchup.

On Saturday, the Raiders traveled to California, Pennsylvania, where they showed improvement, but still dropped the matchup, 6-1. Each double and each athlete competing in the singles won at least one game in their respective matches.

At No. 6 singles, Winters dominated the match and won 6-0, 6-1, which was the first win of the season for the Raiders.

Freshman Brinley Orris lost the first set 5-7 in her No. 5 singles match but showed resiliency in the second set. She won it 6-1 to force the third-set tiebreak, where she eventually lost.

Gallagher won one and four games in her two sets, and Rupert won three and one games in her match, but both fell in their matches. Markovich won a game in each set of her No. 1 singles match, but lost 6-1, 6-1. Zapach won two games in each set, but lost 6-2, 6-2.

Shippensburg´s overall record is now 0-2.

The Raiders will take the court again on Wednesday, Sept. 13, with a home match against Thomas Jefferson University at 3 p.m.
