Dining and Budget Discussed in SGA Meeting

The Shippensburg University Student Government Association (SGA) held its sixth public meeting of the semester on April 13.

During public comment, a student raised concerns over dining options on campus. Until recently, there were limited dining options for students on campus after 8 p.m. In the past week, Burgers and Fries (B&F) has introduced a “Late-Night Menu” that runs from 8-11:30 p.m. Four of the five non-customizable combos cost more than a meal swipe; only the grilled cheese combo may be purchased with a meal swipe. The grilled cheese is also the only vegetarian option, and there are no vegan or dairy-free options available.

There were also concerns regarding committees not publishing minutes from their meetings. According to SGA members, most committees have met this year; however, only five of SGA’s 12 committees have any minutes posted for this academic year.

According to the SGA Constitution, committee chairs are responsible for submitting formal minutes to the Vice President of Internal Affairs and SGA Administrative Assistant within 48 hours of committee meetings.

The SGA website currently has minutes from 17 meetings of the Budget & Finance Committee, eight from Student Groups, three from External Affairs and two each from Sustainability and Diversity and Inclusion. The remaining committees (Academic Affairs, Campus Safety & Facilities, Elections, Food Service, Information Technology, Internal Affairs and Student Life) have zero minutes posted.

The Activities Programming Board (APB) announced that it will be hosting a Block Party in the C-7 Commuter Lot on April 21 from 7-9 p.m. APB will also be hosting a bingo event in CUB MPR the following Saturday, April 22. from 9-11 p.m.

SGA will be holding one more public meeting this semester, which will serve as Student Government’s transition ceremony. 2023-2024 officers and senators will be sworn in, and they will represent students next year. First-year Senators and any vacant positions will be elected during the fall election.

The 2022-2023 SGA has one more task before it hands over the reins — passing the 2023-2024 student activity fee budget. SGA is required to pass the budget by the end of April, and vote on it during its transition meeting. The budget includes student groups’ operating budgets, which are determined and allocated by the Budget and Finance Committee, before being approved by the university president and SGA.

Student group operating budgets should be available for review via CampusGroups 48 hours before Thursday’s SGA meeting. Students are welcome to attend this meeting and offer public comment regarding the budget or other matters. The meeting is Thursday, April 20, at 4 p.m. in CUB MPR C.
