From Game Boy to Cinematic Animation: A Review of “The Super Mario Bros Movie”

Picture this: It’s the early 2000’s and you’re in the car on your way home. It’s nighttime, and you’re trying to play Super Mario Bros. on your Game Boy, using the light from the passing streetlamps to illuminate the screen.

That brings back some memories you forgot you had, didn’t it?

Nintendo and Illumination plan to bring the beloved franchise to the big screens in “The Super Mario Bros Movie,” which be in cinemas soon. The trailer for the movie was released on Oct. 6, 2022.

Watching this trailer, I was stunned by the impressive quality of the animation. It starts off with the arrival of King Bowser and his minions in what seems to be a snow kingdom. The voice acting for characters such as Kamek and Bowser was also impressive; however, the voice for Kamek –at least to me – did not seem to fit very well when compared to the voice heard in the games.

The intimidation factor in the beginning of the trailer also surprised me. In the games, Bowser – while he is stronger than most enemies you face – isn’t really seen as a truly formidable foe; however, this trailer significantly changed that.

After destroying the snow kingdom and gaining a Star, Bowser confidently questions who will stop him. The camera goes black, and we hear the nostalgic start to the classic Mario Bros. music, which definitely brought me back to my childhood! Mario flies through a green pipe and bounces off of a few mushrooms before landing on the grassy land below.

This scene seemed a bit slow to me; however, it’s only a trailer, so I won’t judge too hard. It was silly, but it makes sense given what the movie is about.

We meet Toad, and together he and Mario run towards Mushroom Kingdom, and the trailer ends with an intense chase between Luigi and a horde of Dry Bones.

Overall, as someone who has enjoyed the franchise as a kid, I am impressed by this trailer and its animation. The added detail and personality to each of the characters seen in the preview is great. I am certainly looking forward to seeing this in theaters.
