The Shippensburg University volleyball team defeated Clarion University in straight sets Tuesday night in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) quarterfinal matchup at Heiges Field House.

The No. 2 seed Raiders won by set scores of 25-22, 25-16 and 25-21 over the No. 7 seed Golden Eagles.

“It’s great to play with energy in the gym,” said coach Leanne Piscotty. “Our fans are really on board this year and they provide a really positive game environment.”

SU’s stellar senior class performed well during the game. Gabriella Johnson, Samantha Webber and Kendall Johnson racked up 15, 14 and 10 kills, respectively.

Senior Megan Forstburg led the team with 19 digs, while junior Gianna Sigado picked up 16 digs.

“[Our seniors] are four-year starters and they play very key roles for us,” Piscotty said. “They play with a ton of composure and have each built up a very high volleyball IQ. They’re able to apply that IQ to make adjustments mid-match and learn from mistakes.”

With the victory, the Raiders advance to the semifinals of the PSAC tournament against East Stroudsburg University. That semifinal match will take place on Friday, though the time and location of the match have yet to be confirmed.

“It’s just about being prepared [for that next match],” Piscotty said. “We have to know our opponent as well as possible so that we go in with a game plan and an idea of what we’re gonna do.”
