Pennsylvania State Police are investigating a shooting that occurred Sunday night near campus that left one man dead and sent another to the hospital in critical condition.

Lt. Mark A. Magyar, state police Criminal Investigation Section commander, said at a press conference shortly after 11 p.m. that state police responded about 8:15 p.m. to 217 High St. in Shippensburg “for a shots fired call.”

Police said they received numerous calls reporting gunshots in the area.

According to Magyar, police found the dead man lying outside a vehicle. The second victim was found nearby and transported by Life Lion helicopter to Geisinger Holy Spirit Hospital Carlisle Center. He is in critical condition, according to police.

The helicopter took off from a field near the area of Seth Grove Stadium and the SU Foundation.

Magyar said police currently do not have any suspects in custody. It is unknown how many suspects are involved.

“We’re doing our best to track them down,” he said.

Magyar said state police are working with the Shippensburg University Police Department to keep students informed. “Our main concern is the welfare and safety of the students.” The victims were not identified by police, and Magyar said officials do not know yet if the victims are SU students.

An SUALERT was issued at 9:06 p.m. “Reports of shots fired off campus on High St. Avoid the area. Contact State Police if you have any information.”

Another alert was issued at 11:18 p.m. “Update to shooting off campus on High St. State Police report there is no immediate threat to the public at this time and continue to investigate.”

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact state police at (717) 249-2121 or the SUPD at (717) 477-1444.
