The Shippensburg University women’s soccer team improved to 8–5 on the year, following two consecutive wins at home this past week over Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) rivals Seton Hill University and Mercyhurst University.
The Raiders began their week at David See Field with a 3–2 win over the Griffins of Seton Hill on Wednesday, Oct. 5.
The game was tied late, but Ashley Weaver broke the stalemate with her second goal of the game in the 80th minute to propel the Raiders past the pesky Griffins. The assist on the play came from a head-pass from Molly Patterson.
Weaver’s two-goal effort matched her season total for goals entering Wednesday’s game. Following the contest, she was the sole-owner of the top spot on the SU leaderboard for goals with four.
The Raider offense made their presence known versus Seton Hill, posting an 8–5 advantage in shots on goal and a 7–3 advantage in corner kicks.
In the net, Leah Roy made three saves.
The Raiders then moved on to host Mercyhurst on Saturday, Oct. 8. SU was able to come away with a win versus the Lakers, 2–0, thanks in large part to a strong defensive effort.
Through the first half, the SU defense only allowed four shots, with only one of those shots forcing a save from goalkeeper Leah Roy.
On the offensive side of the ball, Shippensburg could not solve Laker goalkeeper Kristen Koch in the first 45 minutes. The Mercyhurst defense put up a solid first half in front of its keeper, as well, holding the Raiders to just six shots. Three of those shots made their way to Koch.
The tie was finally broken 16 minutes into the second half when Casey Rightmyer headed in a free kick from Stephanie Allshouse. The goal would be enough to secure the SU win, but SU’s Weaver added an insurance marker in the 66th minute for her fifth goal of the season to put the Raiders up two.
Roy only saw one more shot throughout the second half and went on to record her fourth shutout of the year.
SU finished with a dominant edge in shots on goal 10–2. Seven of those shots came in second half. The ladies also had the advantage in corners, 7–3.
The women’s soccer team returns to action Tuesday, Oct. 11 at Millersville for a PSAC contest with the Marauders. The game is scheduled for 5 p.m.
