Shippensburg University held its annual lacrosse clinic on Sunday, February 28th from 10:00-1:00 p.m on the Robb Sports Complex field. The clinic was hosted by coaches Ashley Manion and Mary Alice Powers along with the SU women’s lacrosse team for 6th-12th grade girls. The lacrosse team and coaching staff instructed the clinic through various drills and games.

The clinic began with the participants being introduced to the current team and coaches. After an icebreaker warm-up game and stretching, the team then split the girls up based on their positions. Attackers, midfielders, defenders and several goalies were in attendance. The SU team split up into positions as well, and each group of girls was coached by SU team members in the same position for the majority of the clinic. The team provided instructions, tips and demos to each of the girls prior to starting each drill or activity.

The clinic was a chance for the participants to get a lot of individual and group feedback from the coaches and players as to what they are doing well and what they can improve on.

Some activities used throughout the clinic included 1v1s, 2v2s, and games such as ‘Steal the Bacon’ and ‘Power and Finesse’. The team also demonstrated to the participants one of the offenses that they run throughout the season.

Freshman Aly Danick gave a tour of campus after the clinic ended for any of the girls and their families that were interested.

The clinic is held to spread interest of lacrosse in the area, as well as to help the girls participating gain knowledge from collegiate coaches and players. The clinic is a great opportunity for those who are currently playing in high school so they can get their sticks in their hands right before their high school season games begin. The girls get a chance to play with other girls that they may not be used to playing with.

The money raised from the clinic goes toward the SU women’s lacrosse program and team funds.
