The women’s basketball team bounced back from its loss to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East cellar-dweller Cheyney University with a 64-55 win over Lock Haven University last Wednesday night at Heiges Field House.
The game was close for a majority of the night, but the ladies capitalized on a big fourth quarter in which they outscored the Bald Eagles 21-11 to secure the victory. It was a Colleen Young three-pointer at the 9:50 mark of the fourth quarter that gave the Raiders a lead they would hold for the remainder.
The ladies continued a trend of poor shooting versus the Bald Eagles, but were afforded nine more field goal attempts courtesy of 22 Lock Haven turnovers. In their last eight games the Raiders have only shot above 40 percent three times, with two of those coming against Mansfield and Cheyney. In their previous 17, Shippensburg shot below the 40 percent mark twice.
Morgan Griffith led the way for the Raiders with 21 points and 11 rebounds, securing her 14th double-double of the season. Right behind her were Colleen Young and Logan Synder, clocking in at 18 points and 8 points, respectively.
The Raiders remain in second place in the PSAC East with the win and hold a 2½ game lead on Millersville. The ladies can clinch a first-round bye with a win or a Millersville loss.
The women’s team will be in action again this Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Heiges Field House to take on the Bloomsburg University Huskies. Also on the slate for the evening will be a Make-A-Wish reveal at half-time of the women’s game. SU students can gain free admission to the event with their student ID and the first 500 fans will receive a T-shirt.
