After bus troubles delayed the Raiders’ arrival, the Shippensburg University tennis team lost their last match of their pre-season 5-4 to Shenandoah on Saturday night at Winchester Community College. The match was close, but the Raiders were not able to overcome the Hornets.

Senior Brittnee Buckley and junior Emilie Luttman played number one doubles for SU against the Hornets’ first doubles team. Buckley and Luttman fell short, ending the set with a score of 2-8 in favor of Shenandoah.

Freshman Gabbie Binder and senior Emily Cox played number two doubles against the Shenandoah Hornets team. The pair won their set 9-8, setting them up to go into a tiebreaker. The tiebreaker resulted in Binder and Cox winning 7-5.

Freshman Kaylin Gallagher and senior Bryanna Beamer played number three doubles winning with a score of 8-1.

Senior Brittnee Buckley played her second match of the night, this time as the first singles player. Buckley lost to Shenandoah University player Molly Barb in two long sets. The first set and second set both ended in a 1-6 score.

Freshman Gabbie Binder played in the number two slot for singles, and won her sets to help her team. Despite her efforts, Binder lost to Amy Rapp, who played number two singles for the Hornets. Both sets resulted in a loss for Binder at 2-6.

Emilie Luttman, junior, played number three singles for the Raiders against Shenandoah University’s Caitlyn Tilton. Luttman and Tilton split sets, leaving them to play a third. Tilton won with a score of 1-6 (first set), 6-0 (second set), 0-6 (third set).

Senior Emily Cox played number four singles for SU against Hornets player Kelsey Nicely. Cox won her first set with a score of 6-2 and proceeded to win her second set with a score of 6-0.

Sophomore Hannah Coath also won her match against Shenandoah University’s Andrea Wright. Coath and Wright had extremely long volleys for many of their points, yet Coath was able to win her sets at 6-0 and 6-2.

Freshman Megan Moorhead lost her match against the Hornets’ Melodie Madison. Madison won the sets, which resulted in a loss for the Raiders at 2-6 and 3-6.

The tennis team will be back in action March 12 in Greensburg, PA, when they kick of the start of the regular season versus Seton Hill.
