Star soccer player Lionel Messi scored his 300th career goal in the Spanish football league last week, becoming the first player to ever reach that mark in La Liga.

Messi also scored another goal later on in the same match, which was against fellow Spanish club Sporting Gijon. Messi has now scored 301 goals in 334 appearances in La Liga for Barcelona.

In all competitions, he has scored over 430 goals throughout his career. Messi has scored 15 goals this season in the league and has scored 27 goals in all competitions for Barcelona. He could have reached the milestone in the previous match when Barcelona was awarded a penalty, but rather than scoring the penalty himself, Messi passed the ball from the spot to teammate Luis Suárez for the goal instead. Barcelona won that game very comfortably with a score of 6-1 behind a goal and two assists from Messi.

Messi is the reigning Ballon D’Or winner, which is the award given to the best player in the world for that year. The judging is done by journalists from around the world. Messi has won the award a record 5 times, four of which have come since 2010. He has also come in second place twice. Messi and Real Madrid player Cristiano Ronaldo have dominated the past five years of Ballon D’or voting, with the latter beating Messi for the prize the previous two years in 2013 and 2014.

Since making his soccer debut for Barcelona in 2005, Messi has been a consistent attacking threat and statistically one of the best players on the planet. He has also helped Barcelona win 7 league titles and 4 Champions League titles, which is the biggest competition of all the top clubs in Europe. Prior to Messi, Barcelona had only ever won one Champions League.

Messi’s accolades have also helped attract other players to Barcelona. The idea of being able to play alongside Messi is enough to bring many of the world’s top talents to them. The fact that Messi has pledged his eternal loyalty to Barcelona leaves no worry in the minds of fans and since he is only 28 years old, fans can look forward to watching him dominate for many seasons to come. Messi is also on pace to score 500 league goals and could do so before the end of his career.
