Swim teams make big splash with Top 8 team finishes

The Shippensburg University men's and women’s swim teams traveled to Ithaca College on Dec. 4 to compete in the three-day 2015 Bomber Invitational.

The men’s team came in eighth place overall, with four competitors swimming qualifying times for the PSAC meet. Jake Dunnigan performed well in the 100-yard individual medley with a time of 54.48 seconds. He also achieved a new season PR in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 48.61. Shaun Smith finished the 100-yard individual medley in 54.80 seconds, while Tyler Clisham and Quinton Beck finished the race in 55.25 seconds and 55.50 seconds, respectively. Evan Smith and Theo McAllister competed in the 100-yard freestyle alongside Dunnigan; Smith finished in 49.26 seconds and McAllister finished in 49.92 seconds. Stefan Szilagyi represented the Raiders in the 200-yard backstroke, swimming the race in 2:03.14. The men’s team finished the meet off with a sixth place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay, which was swam by Kristian Voulopos, Smith, Dunnigan and Szilagyi in 3:11.36.

The women’s team had an exceptional performance at the invitational, finishing fifth place overall with eleven competitors swimming qualifying times for the PSAC meet. Carly Alvarado, Carolyn Meier, Lauren Ellis and Sami Sabol all swam PSAC qualifying times in the 200-yard backstroke. Alvarado finished near the top with 2:08.89, a new season PR. Meier finished in 2:13.52, Ellis in 2:14.25 and Sabol in 2:15.66. Rikki Sargent competed in the 100-yard individual medley with a time of 59.54 seconds. Sidney Owens and Nollaig Noll swam the 100-yard individual medley as well, finishing in 1:00.67 and 1:00.94, respectively. Sargent also performed well in the 200-yard breaststroke with a third place finishing time of 2:22.47. Ellis, Meier, Owens and Sargent wrapped up the meet with a fourth place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:35.14.

The Raiders will head to Edinboro University for their next meet on Jan. 9.
