The Shippensburg University women’s basketball team used a 23-point fourth quarter to hand Gannon University their first loss of the season Sunday evening at the Hammermill Center in Gannon.
The Red Raiders matched up well with its PSAC adversary, forcing the Golden Knights into 14 turnovers in a 75-69 road victory. SU was coming off their first loss of the season, which was a two-point nail-biting home loss to Mercyhurst University.
SU was able to capitalize on Gannon's excessive fouling, converting an incredible 29-32 (90.6 percent) free throw attempts on the night. The Raiders' defense was able to keep Gannon in check from the three-point line as well, limiting them to 5-26 on three-point attempts in the victory.
The Raiders held a six-point lead at the half, but Gannon was able to keep the game within reach, with the Raiders holding a four-point lead going into the fourth and deciding quarter. SU junior Colleen Young converted only one field goal attempt on the night, but it was a big one as her three-pointer with 3:40 left to play gave Shippensburg a 68-62 lead. SU kept knocking down their free throws to close out the game.
Junior Morgan Griffith and junior Lauren Gold were both perfect from the line in the game, with Gold converting 12 free throws and Griffith converting 10 free throws. Griffith picked up a double-double in the victory, stuffing the staff sheet with 24 points and 10 rebounds in 32 minutes. Griffith is averaging a double-double on the season with 15 points and 11.8 rebounds per game this season for SU.
Junior guard Logan Snyder continued a strong start to the season, where she is shooting an astonishing 73.5 percent from the field in the Raiders' five games.
The win against Gannon improved Shippensburg University’s record to 4-1 on the young season. SU women’s basketball will be in action again on Dec. 1 when West Chester University will travel to Heiges Field House at 6 p.m. for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference showdown against the Raiders.
