Shippensburg track & field shine in season debut

Shippensburg University’s men's and women’s track and field teams shocked the region with a powerful performance in their season debut. At the Bison Opener at Bucknell University over the weekend, the Raiders fought hard and represented Shippensburg well with stellar performances through and through. Both teams ignited a great start to their seasons with powerful individual performances that will set their 2015-2016 campaigns off right.

In the 400-meter dash, senior Megan Lundy ran a valiant race, posting a time of 59.11 seconds that qualified her for PSACs and obtained a first place finish. Amongst other strong outings, sophomore Lindsay Sheehan also qualified for the PSAC tournament with a time of 7.99 in her second place finish in the 60-meter sprint. Not only did Sheehan post an impressive time in the 60-meter sprint, but also she was able to snag third place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.39. Senior mid-distance runner Rachel Lilley ran hard in the 5K as she crossed the finish line second with a time of 19:48.24. The overall impressive outing by the women’s team was capped off by great standings in the field. In the pole vault, sophomore Kali Hepner tied in second place, Sarah Hunt took second place with a 5.67 meter jump and Tamara Ovejera shattered the competition with a shot put throw of 14.11m, taking first place.

The Shippensburg men’s team had a strong performance, with sophomore Andrew Adighibe taking first place in the 60m dash with a time of 6.84 seconds and first place in the 200 meter with a time of 22.13 seconds. Timmy Usher ran a strong 800m dash, taking first, running 1:55.60 seconds. Shippensburg took first overall in the 4X400 meter relay, with Tim Usher, Ricky Meriwether, Austin Shupp and Chris Craig anchoring the relay. Grant Smith took first place in the shot put with a throw of 17.12m and the weight throw with a distance of 17.19 meters. Danny Meyer also performed well in the heptathlon, posting 4,441 points.
