Cyndi Lauper could not have said it better when she released the hit song “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” in 1983.

A Girls Night program was hosted by two Shippensburg University resident assistants, Olivia Weber and Karla Moses, both of Seavers hall.

“It was a fun, engaging and interactive event,” Weber said.

The festivities were held in the Multi-Purpose Room of Naugle hall on Wednesday, Nov. 18 at 8:30 p.m. Weber and Moses envisioned having a night where girls could come together and be themselves.

“We tried to create a space for laughter, friendship and most importantly fun,” Moses said. “It is always nice to know that people besides your family are concerned with your well-being.”

The event was a B.Y.O.P. (Bring Your Own Polish). Some girls' fingers were already painted and they were asked to paint the nails of the other attendees. Girls were also able to create homemade facials with Weber. They were taught how to make two different kinds of facials; one focused on dry skin and the other helped with acne. The dry skin remedy contained oats, honey and olive oil. The acne facial contained honey, lemon and cinnamon. The participants enjoyed making facials and they learned how to create recipes to help manage their skin every day.

The Women’s Center provided pamphlets and brochures of women’s health and safety at the event, as well. Weber and Moses made goody bags for each of the girls and they put the literature inside.

In addition to goody bags, the program had four different desserts and mocktails. There were brownies, chocolate chip cookies, cupcakes and ice cream. The drinks consisted of sprite, red grenadine and a cherry to make a Shirley Temple.

“I wish we had something like this every month,” said Tyra Harley of Seavers Hall.

Weber and Moses enjoyed planning the event and plan on hosting another one next semester.
