The women’s soccer team captured a 2-0 victory over Shepherd University, but dropped a 2-0 decision against West Chester University in a pair of games this week.

So far this season, SU (3-4-1) has faced a rigorous schedule. In its seven games this season it has already faced the top six ranked PSAC teams from last season.

Wednesday Sept. 23

The Raiders recorded goals in each half and cruised to a 2-0 victory over out-of-conference Shepherd University.

The Raiders scored first when sophomore Mallory Patterson took advantage of a penalty kick due to a Shepherd handball. The goal was Patterson’s first of the season.

In the second half, junior Ashley Weaver notched her second goal of the season when she fired a shot past the Shepherd goalkeeper.

The Raiders outshot Shepherd 21-7, including a four-shot-advantage in shots-on-goal.

Saturday Sept. 26

Shippensburg’s inability to create scoring opportunities was the decisive factor of the match as they dropped a road game 2-0 to West Chester University.

SU (3-4-1) held West Chester scoreless in the first half but allowed a pair of goals in the second period.

The Golden Rams’ Marissa Valenti and Kara Pavel posted scores at the 62 and 76-minute mark, respectively. Both goals were assisted by Libbie Fraizer.

West Chester’s strong defense limited SU’s scoring opportunities and caused trouble for the Raiders’ offense all game. SU was held to just six shots—including just three shots on goal. In the game West Chester had 19 shots, including 11 shots on goal.

Sophomore goalkeeper Kayla Kennedy made her first start of the season, recording nine saves in her debut.

The Raiders host PSAC rival Bloomsburg University on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
