The Shippensburg University men’s soccer team lost 1-0 in a close battle with West Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday afternoon.

The visiting Bobcats scored the only goal of the evenly-matched game in the 28th minute on a diving header by midfielder Paul Smith. This goal would be all the Bobcats needed for victory, as the Raiders were unable to score despite having a few opportunities.

The best chance for a Raider goal came about six minutes after the Bobcats’ score. A corner kick sailed past a crowd of players and into the possession of junior Tyler Whitehead, who beat the goalkeeper for a clear shot. Unfortunately, the ball sailed a little too high and bounced off of the crossbar, where the Bobcats were able to clear it.

Freshman goalkeeper Matt Harder kept the Raiders in the game, giving up just one goal and putting up five additional saves. Opposing goalkeeper Luka Pauk recorded the shutout for the Bobcats with two saves.

The loss puts the Raiders at 4-5 on the season with a matchup against Gannon coming on Saturday, October 2, at 2:30 p.m.
