The Shippensburg men’s soccer team hosted Holy Family this past Wednesday for an afternoon matchup at David See Field. The Red Raiders were able to outlast the Tigers and walk away with a 2-1 victory.
It only took the Raiders a little over three minutes to score their first goal. Junior Colin McConnell directed a free kick towards the right side of the box where sophomore Colten Arnold was able to take the pass and tap the ball in for the easy goal.
For the next fifteen minutes the Tigers attacked the goal, looking to get on the scoreboard. However, all of their efforts were unsuccessful as junior goalkeeper Evan Raimist made his season debut for the Raiders. His stellar defensive performance kept things in place until the Raiders could extend the lead.
At the 22-minute mark, junior Jeff Ballard delivered a pass to senior Derek Adams, who was able to score in a 1-on-1 matchup with the goalkeeper. This was Adams’ second goal of the season and gave the Raiders the small lead they needed to win.
Holy Family responded in the second period with a goal by Tom Kostick, who scored on a penalty kick. The Tigers had multiple opportunities to score again during the remainder of the game, but Evan Raimist was still locked in and was able to keep the Tigers off of the board, sealing a Red Raider victory. Raimist finished the day with six saves.
The Raiders will play their first road game of the season this Saturday at Slippery Rock for an afternoon matchup.
