Spoiler Alert!
Anxious “Pretty Little Liars” fans gathered around their televisions, Tuesday night, to watch the popular show’s jam-packed season five finale.
The episode, which premiered March 24 at 8 p.m. on ABC Family, was full of jaw-dropping moments and shocking revelations.
The successful ABC Family television series takes place in the fictional town of Rosewood, Pennsylvania, and follows the lives of four girls, whose friendship falls apart after the disappearance of one of their friends, Alison DiLaurentis.
A year later, the girls begin to receive messages from someone that goes by “A.” As time goes on, “A” threatens to expose the girls’ deepest secrets to everyone.
“Welcome to the Dollhouse” is the name of season five’s final episode. It begins with Aria, Emily, Hanna and Spencer in the back of a van that is in route to the penitentiary. Suddenly, the van stops and someone breaks in, releasing a gas that makes all the girls fall asleep.
Later, the girls find themselves in what they believe to be their bedrooms, but in reality, it is a prototype of each of their personal bedrooms. Confused and scared, they all set off down a lighted hallway to discover a blonde-haired Mona playing a piano, who tells them it is time to play a game where they dress up to attend a prom and discover their mystery date.
Meanwhile, while the girls are stuck in “A’s” dollhouse, Toby, Ezra and Caleb are trying to figure out where the girls may have been taken and how they can be saved.
As time goes on, Mona tells the girls that “A” told her to fake her death and began holding her hostage in a dollhouse, while forcing her to pretend she is Alison DiLaurentis. She goes on to tell the girls that there might be a way to escape and explains to them that she has attempted to escape multiple times before, but it is too hard.
That night, when the girls are asleep, Spencer has a dream that reveals the name “Charles.” Spencer then begins to realize “A” just might have a name after all.
Spencer’s parents reveal to Toby, later, that they know about “A.” Toby tells both of them that “A” has secrets on everyone, including them.
The show continues with the girls attending the prom that “A” planned. As the girls take a look around, all they see are plastic mannequins dressed up in formal attire. The girls call out the name “Charles” and he begins to emerge from the darkness. As he moves closer, the electricity goes out and the girls attempt to escape.
As the girls are escaping, Spencer discovers a room where a film reel begins to play a video of Alison and what seems to be two of her brothers. Jason is not her only sibling, evidently.
The episode ends with the girls running toward a doorway that leads somewhere outside. Once outside, they come to realize they are surrounded by an electric fence and have nowhere to go.
There seemed to be mixed reactions from fans regarding the season finale. Some showed excitement in the fact that Mona was still alive, while others were ultimately left confused.
Rebekah Elbel, who is a huge fan of the show and has been watching since the beginning, said, “I was in total shock. I was confused and disappointed.”
While this season finale leaves fans on the edge of their seats, it also brings up the many assumptions and questions that are going through people’s minds, such as “Does Alison have another brother?” and “What do Spencer’s parents know about ‘A’?”
Fans will soon find out, when “Pretty Little Liars” returns this June on ABC Family.
