The Shippensburg University women’s basketball team fell 72-70 to Lock Haven on a last-second field goal after forty minutes of highly contested play on Saturday.

Shippensburg (17-10, 13-8 PSAC) led by 12 points early in the game’s opening minutes, but Lock Haven (11-14, 10—11 PSAC) finished the half with a 12-2 run to lead by seven at the buzzer. Shippensburg then held a six-point lead with just under five minutes in the contest, but Lock Haven rallied with 19 points in the final 4:38 to snatch a victory from the Raiders.

SU trailed by four points late in the second period until freshman Vicky Tumaz nailed a 3-pointer that brought the score to 68-67. After Lock Haven made consecutive free throws, Tumaz nailed another three to tie the game at 70 with 13 seconds remaining. After a timeout and near turnover, Lock Haven’s J.J. Hilliard received a pass, drove and landed a jumper from the free-throw line with 1.1 seconds remaining to give Lock Haven a 72-70 lead.

Following Hilliard’s shot, the Raiders took a timeout and were unable to get off a last- second shot to tie or win the game

Shippensburg got 22 points from sophomore point guard Lauren Gold and freshman Forward Morgan Griffith landed her 13th double-double of the season as Shippensburg fell to 17-10 on the season.

Gold shot a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line and went 2-for-3 from three-point range. She also added another seven rebounds and seven assists and committed only two turnovers in 34 minutes of play.

Tumaz finished the game with 11 points, shooting 3-6 from long range. Junior Stephanie Knauer and sophomore Logan Snyder each scored seven points for the Raiders.

Shippensburg had already clinched the PSAC East’s NO. 3 seed entering Saturday. Lock Haven’s win on the same afternoon kept its PSAC Tournament dreams alive, tying them with East Stroudsburg for the No. 4 seed in the standings.

The Raiders’ regular-season finale is at 6 p.m. Wednesday against Cheyney at Heiges Field House.
