The Shippensburg University Football team knew that to improve on last year’s 7-4 campaign, which they started out 0-2, they would need to start the season off right.

They have done just that, winning their second game of the season on Saturday afternoon with balanced ground, air and defensive attacks to beat the Edinboro Fighting Scots (0-2) 47-21and remain undefeated (2-0).

Senior wide out Trevor Harman broke several long-standing Raider’s records on the day. His 3,555 career receiving yards eclipses Jamie Ware and sets him at sixth all-time in PSAC history. His two touchdowns gave him 324 career points, surpassing Green Bay Packer John Kuhn’s (2004) previous record.

“I know when I first came here from my high school, you always hear about John Coons, Brent Grimes, all those guys, Jamie Ware, (people) always talk about them,” said Harman. “And breaking his (Kuhn’s) record now is something I’ve had my eyes on. Being able to break his record though and what he’s done here and what he’s accomplished in the NFL, it’s something great.”

Senior RB Blair Brooks had a big game on Saturday as well, rushing 18 times for a career-high 170 yards and two touchdowns.

The Raiders looked sharp on Saturday afternoon in all facets of the game. With 246 yards on the ground and 233 through the air, the Raiders took the lead in the second quarter and never looked back.

At 2:44 in the first quarter, Edinboro quarterback Cody Harris hit his favorite target on the night, wide receiver Darren Massey for a 19-yard score.

The pair would finish the night with impressive stats, despite the loss. Harris completed 29 of 36 for 300 yards with two scores, and Massey picked up 161 yards on 11 catches and his first-quarter touchdown.

Shippensburg quarterback Chris Lawshe, who split reps with Ryan Zapoticky, came out to play in the second quarter. He took the Raiders on a 62-yard, 13-play drive that ended in a 4-yard rushing score from Brooks.

The drive would set up an 11-minute scoring binge for the Raiders, who put up 33 unanswered points with contributions from all of the Raider’s units.

With 3:06 in the second quarter, Brooks took the ball on a 62-yard scamper for his second touchdown of the day. Lawshe connected with Harman on a 19-yard strike with 32 seconds left in the half.

Up 19-7, SU had no intentions of letting up in the second half. Harman scored again less than two minutes into the third quarter, this time on a 33-yarder from Zapoticky.

The defense showed up in the third as well; senior linebacker Brian Sourber cut off a Harris pass attempt, picked it off and took it to the house for 48 yards and six points.

Edinboro worked hard to even out the score again. Harris took a 6-yard quarterback keeper to the house with 8:35 left in the third quarter to bring the score to 33-14.

But the Raiders answered right back on a Lawshe 4-yard pass to Sheldon Mayer at the end of the quarter.

After a third Fighting Scots touchdown pass from Harris to Kolbe Hughes, good for eight yards, Justin Pyle of the Raiders ran the ball in from two yards out to bring the score to 47-21.

That is how the game would end, as the Raiders brought their home record to 15-3 since coach Mark Maciejewski took over.

“It was a great team effort today,” said Coach Mac. “There were some guys who really shone out there, did some really good things. The one thing I liked was that I think our kids compete for 60 minutes. I like that.”

Shippensburg hosts family day next Saturday at noon against California at Seth Grove Stadium in a PSAC matchup. California (1-1) lost to Bloomsburg last week 21-24, but beat Virginia State 33-24 in week one.
