The defending division 2 national champions Lady Raiders hosted the defending PSAC champions Millersville in the 2014 home opener for Shippensburg.

In front of a capacity crowd at David See Field, the Lady Raiders (2-1, 0-1 PSAC) fell to the Lady Marauders (2-0, 1-0 PSAC) 1-0. The only goal of the game was scored by Katelyn Zapp early in the second half, who was assisted by Alicia Youtz. Zapp tipped the ball in past the diving SU goalkeeper Ally Mooney (freshman), who recorded three saves on the night.

The goal scored by Millersville was the first goal let go by Shippensburg this season. Shippensburg outscored their opponents 7-0 in their first two games.

The Lady Raiders had two chances to score against the Lady Marauders in the game.

After a clear in the first half, Sophomore Cassie Rawa got the ball and shot it toward the net. But MU goalkeeper Lauren Sotzin blocked the shot and the dribbling rebound for the save.

Then with 5:24 to go in the game, with SU trailing 0-1, a shot by freshman Emily Barnard ricocheted off of Sotzin’s pads toward the open net, but MU defender Kayla Bixler tipped the ball with her stick last minute to prevent the tying score.

After 63 shots on goal in the last two games for SU, the teams combined for 10 shots in Tuesday’s defensive clash.

The loss snapped a 29-regular season game-winning streak for Shippensburg. The Lady Raiders haven’t lost a regular season game since September 19, 2012 when they lost on the road to Indiana (PA). The final score of that game was 1-3.

The lady raiders return to action this Saturday (9/13) at David See Field when they host #8 ranked Lady Warriors of East Stroudsburg University. The game is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
